Sir Baddeley Devesi GCMG GCVO (born October 16, 1941 in Guadalcanal , Solomon Islands ; † February 16, 2012 ) was a Solomon Islands politician who was the first Governor General of the Solomon Islands from 1978 to 1988 .

Life

Baddeley Devesi was one of the leaders of the movement that demanded the independence of the British protectorate and, after the granting of internal autonomy in 1976, criticized in particular the lack of preparation for granting independence to Great Britain, which led to tensions and political crises.

After the Solomon Islands gained independence from Great Britain on July 7, 1978, he became the country's first Governor General and held this position for two five-year terms until July 7, 1988 and his replacement by George Lepping . For his services he was honored on January 22nd, 1980 with the Grand Crosses of the Order of St. Michael and St. George and the Royal Victorian Order and then added the name "Sir".

Subsequently, Baddeley Devesi continued to be involved in politics and was elected a member of the National Parliament of the Solomon Islands , where he represented the constituency of North East Guadalcanal for several years .

In March 1989 he was appointed foreign minister in his cabinet by Prime Minister Solomon Mamaloni , and after a cabinet reshuffle from 1990 to June 1993 he was Deputy Prime Minister and until 1992 also Minister of the Interior in the Mamaloni government.

He took over the post of Deputy Prime Minister again in August 1997 in the government of Prime Minister Bartholomew Ulufa'alu . He held this position until the coup and the associated kidnapping of Prime Minister Ulufa'alu in June 2000 by members of the Malaita Eagle Force , who accused the Prime Minister of not having done enough to defend the interests of Malaita . During these ethnic tensions, he campaigned for the prime minister's release and pacification, and then withdrew from political life.
