history

The bathhouse today

The bathhouse was built in the 1870s in the old spa park on the former site of the salt works. Before construction began, however, the location was discussed. After agreeing on today's place, further problems followed. The ground was not created for such a building. Therefore, you had to ram logs into the ground to create a secure foundation. After the building was completed in 1870/71, changes were made again a short time later, as the building did not quite match the plans. First the windows were enlarged, as the small ones gave the house a more stable look. The zinc roof also had to be replaced because it was leaking and the wood threatened to rot. So a slate roof was built.

In 1896/97 the interior was modernized and in 1906 the building was raised by another floor. Shortly afterwards the "Mediko-mechanical institute" moved to the first floor of the building. A laboratory for sputum tests and a bacteriological-chemical institute were also set up. In 1913/14 the building was expanded again. During the Second World War , the building suffered severe damage, with the upper floor being destroyed. In June 1947, the bathhouse was able to resume operations with a makeshift renovation. In the 1950s, it was rebuilt again, with the balcony being given a glass facade to add another room.

In the bath house there were 40 bathing cabins with wooden and stoneware tubs that were available to the spa guests. Various treatments were carried out here, including electrical and dry treatments or brine and mineral water treatments. In 1994 these facilities moved to the Medico Palais, leaving the bathhouse empty. In 1997 it was extensively restored and the city library moved to the ground floor. Today the city archive, the city museum and the city gallery with precious art exhibitions are also located here.
