history

19th century

The old spa park was laid out in 1823 in the style of an English landscape park by the Nassau state government on the site of the former salt works. The establishment of such a facility became necessary due to the growing spa business. The area of the former graduation tower on Königsteiner Strasse was selected . In 1831 the municipality of Soden bought the remaining buildings of the graduation tower and the springs used for them. This enabled the park to be expanded. The southern and oldest part of the park, however, was still separated from the northern part at that time, as Kronberger Strasse still ran through here.

In 1848 the spa park was enlarged and redesigned. The two parts of the park were joined together and Kronberger Strasse was moved to its current area. In 1849 the first spa house was built in the northern part . The castle hill in the east of the park, on which the castle hill observation tower , built in 1900, stands, was also made accessible . Wine was grown here until 1881.

The frog pond existed in the northern part of the spa park until 1866, but it was filled in when it was redesigned again. It was the last remnant of the former graduation tower. Numerous new trees were also planted, including trumpet trees , sequoias and ginkgo trees . Some of these can still be found today in the spa gardens. Just five years later, the spa park was redesigned again. This had to do with the construction of the bathhouse . The paths as we know them today have been redesigned. In addition, Grand Duke Friedrich von Baden donated a large number of exotic trees and shrubs to the community as a thank you for his recovery. On April 11, 1895, the monument in honor of the fallen soldiers of the Franco-Prussian War was unveiled in the west of the park. In the following year, the no longer existing tennis facility between Paulinenschlösschen and the concert shell was inaugurated. In 1897/98 the Kurhaus was modernized, whereby a terrace was raised in the outside area and provided with regular planting.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the number of spa guests continued to increase. This meant that the spa buildings had to be enlarged. The bathhouse was enlarged and in 1912 the Burgberg Inhalatorium (today Medico Palais) was built on the edge of the spa gardens . The latter was the largest inhaler in Europe at the time. In 1903 the Wilhelmstempel was built, which stood near the former Wilhelmsbrunnen. This was removed again in 1937. In 1908 the Paulinenschlösschen came into the possession of the community. The associated garden was incorporated into the spa park, which made the spa park its current size. This park was designed by Philipp Siesmayer's Gebrüder Siesmayer company, among others . In 1926/27 the old Kurhaus was torn down and replaced by a new one. Up to the end of the Second World War , hardly any changes were made, except for the construction of the memorial for the fallen of the First World War, the drilling of the New Spring and the construction of the concert shell. During the war the bathhouse was partially destroyed and the former pitcher house behind the concert shell was completely destroyed. Furthermore, the memorial for those who fell in the war in 1870/71 was destroyed.

In 1951 the spa in Bad Soden celebrated its 250th anniversary. Previously, the facilities, such as the bathhouse or the brine pool, were modernized. New plants were also planted and sources VIa and VIb were redesigned. In 1971 the Kurhaus was demolished. A new building followed in 1982, which today houses the Ramada Hotel. To the east of the large meadows lies the duck pond, which was created in 1987 and is fed by the Niederdorfbach.

Nowadays, numerous events and festivals take place in the old spa park. The highlights are the Soden Wine Days (end of May), the Summer Night Festival (mid-August) and the Bad Soden Christmas Market (December). The Sunday concerts also take place in the concert shell every Sunday in summer.
