The Baden-Württemberg Foundation gGmbH was founded in 2000 as the State Foundation Baden-Wurttemberg , based in Stuttgart founded. The assets are around 2.3 billion euros. Every year it provides between 35 and 40 million euros for charitable programs and projects under the motto "We donate the future", making it one of the largest private foundations in Germany.

organization

In 2000 the foundation emerged from the former state holdings of Baden-Württemberg GmbH. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of the state of Baden-Württemberg and is supported by a supervisory board that consists of 18 members. The current minister-president of Baden-Württemberg is always the chairman of the supervisory board. Since 2011, this has been Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann .

The areas of asset and investment management as well as property management are managed by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Finance . The foundation is responsible for managing the non-profit project area. Christoph Dahl has been managing director since 2010. The foundation is a member of the Federal Association of German Foundations and is based in Stuttgart.

Goals of the foundation

The mission and goal of the foundation is to secure the future viability of Baden-Württemberg. The foundation works to ensure that Baden-Württemberg also offers future generations a home worth living in with opportunities for the future. To this end, it supports existing charitable projects throughout the state. As an operational foundation, it also develops its own programs that focus on research, education, and society and culture.

Departments and programs

The foundation defines its own thematic lines in the three departments and publishes calls for proposals. For all programs, in addition to an exclusively non-profit purpose, they must show a recognizable reference to Baden-Württemberg and an innovative character. The foundation currently supports over 1,500 ongoing programs and projects.

research

The foundation supports research programs with the aim of developing new methods and processes in science and technology and optimizing existing ones. This should establish Baden-Württemberg as an attractive research and technology location in international competition. Research is divided into the following programs: life sciences; New technologies; Environment & Sustainability; MINT young talent programs; Baden-Württemberg future offensive; as well as open-topic program lines.

education

The foundation is involved in numerous educational topics in order to broaden future prospects and strengthen Baden-Württemberg's innovative strength. The programs are intended to support talent and inventive talent, contribute to strengthening international exchange and promote lifelong learning. The area of ​​education is divided into the following topics: grants; early childhood education; Youth and vocational education; University; Education for Sustainable Development - Citizenship Education; as well as international understanding. Above all, the scholarships with which the foundation supports schoolchildren, students, professionals and people with a migration background play an important role. The most important scholarships include:

  • the Baden-Württemberg-STIPENDIUM, which enables young people to stay abroad.
  • the Talent program in the state of Baden-Württemberg, which promotes talented schoolchildren with difficult social backgrounds during their Abitur.
  • the elite program for postdocs, which supports scientists on their way to professorship.
  • the professional recognition scholarship program in Baden-Wuerttemberg, which helps people with a migration background with the recognition of foreign professional and academic qualifications.

Society & culture

According to its own statements, the foundation includes all social groups with its programs and projects in order to maintain Baden-Württemberg as a liveable and culturally active state. This includes increasingly projects aimed at the social and professional integration of refugees. The Society & Culture area is subdivided as follows: Stiftung Kinderland Baden-Württemberg; Children, youth & family; Health, inclusion & violence prevention; Integration; Volunteer work; as well as culture.

Publications

The foundation documents and evaluates all of its projects and publishes the results in the form of working papers, series of publications and final reports. The foundation publishes the magazine "Perspektive" twice a year, in which it reports on its programs and projects and takes up a socially relevant topic as a dossier. The foundation's annual reports, each of which has been dedicated to an article of the German Basic Law since 2015, have already received several awards, including gold at the BCM Award in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and with "Best of the Best" at the Red Dot Design Award 2013 and 2015 .

Events

Since 2017, the thematically appropriate series of events "Perspektiven" has been taking place in the Foundation's offices, where journalists, scientists, politicians and citizens have their say. Other important series of events organized by the foundation are the Empowerment Day for Women in Science; the Wanted Science Slam for young scientists; the presentation of the Artur Fischer Inventor Prize endowed with 36,000 euros and the presentation of the Baden-Württemberg Culture Prize, which takes place in cooperation with the Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken; the culture academy, which is aimed at particularly talented schoolchildren; or the Baden-Württemberg Literature Summer, which the foundation organizes as a nationwide festival every two years.

Awards

The foundation's programs and projects have received several awards. For example, the Europe-wide unique information and education initiative Expedition N, the aim of which is to anchor the concept of sustainability in everyday life, was awarded the "Werkstatt N" quality seal in 2011, 2012 and 2013 by the Council for Sustainable Development and in 2011 by the Germany - Land der Initiative Ideas awarded as "Selected Location". The project kicken & read, implemented in cooperation with VfB Stuttgart and SC Freiburg , was awarded the "educational idea" in 2011 by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research . In addition, the health prevention program "Come with me in the healthy boat" received the 2014 health award from the Rufzeichen Gesundheit Foundation.
