Baderich (Old Thuringia)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baderich or Balderich ("the bold", * between 480 and 490; † around 530) was a son of the Thuringian king Bisinus .

His two brothers were called Herminafried and Berthachar , his sister Raicunda was married to the Lombard king Wacho . After the death of his father († 500-510), the three brothers divided the kingdom. Apparently Herminafried took a priority, this can be inferred from the following events.

Gregor von Tours writes that after Herminafried had killed Berthachar, by inciting his wife Amalaberga, the Frankish king Theuderich commissioned the murder of Baderich. As a reward for this act, the area of Baderich was to be divided between Herminafried and Theuderich. Theuderich defeated Baderich in a battle in which the Thuringian king fell. Herminafried no longer thought of dividing the empire. This created enmity between the two kings, which is said to have led to the battle of the Unstrut in 531. But since Gregor was a Franconian and they were hostile to the Thuringians, it is not known to what extent this story corresponds to the truth.

In recent research it is assumed that Baderich died before the Frankish invasions into the Thuringian Empire (first attacks took place in 529, the empire was conquered in 531/34). He apparently died before his brother Herminafried (no reliable details in the sources). Baderich left no offspring and apparently remained unmarried.
