In 1572, the Ernestines began dividing inheritance. They remained the predominant aristocratic family in Thuringia, but they no longer governed a single state, but a large number of small duchies, the so-called Saxon duchies . The chairman of the Ernestines was always the Duke / Grand Duke of Weimar in the following centuries until the end of the monarchy in 1918 (as this was the oldest line of the Ernestines and thus of the House of Wettin), see Dukes of Saxony-Weimar .
