Berthachar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Berthachar ( Bertachar or Berthar , "the brilliant hero", * around 485; † around 530) was after 500 -510 together with his brothers Baderich and Irminfried (Hermenefried) King of Thuringia . One sister was called Raicunda (after Paulus Diaconus also Rathecunda, Ranicunda, Radicunda or Radegunda) and was married to the Longobard king Wacho .

Berthachar was the son of King Bisinus . After the victory of the Franks in 531, his daughter Radegundis was forced to marry by the Frankish king Chlothar I. Her brother was murdered by Chlothar because the Merovingian wanted to eliminate his inheritance claims. Radegunde finally went to the monastery and was later canonized.

In research it is controversial whether Berthachar was killed by his brother Herminafried in the struggle for supremacy (as reported by Gregor von Tours ), or whether he was killed in a Frankish invasion attempt between 528/529 (albeit unsecured) and 531 .
