The station Althengstett is the former train station of Baden-Wuerttemberg community Althengstett . It is located at 37.75 kilometers of the Württemberg Black Forest Railway from Stuttgart to Calw . With the decommissioning of the Weil der Stadt – Calw section in 1983 for passenger traffic and in 1988 for freight traffic, the station was also closed.

history

With the opening of the Weil der Stadt – Calw section in 1872, the Althengstett station was also opened. It is 511 meters above sea level. NN represents the highest point of the Württemberg Black Forest Railway. On the section from Calw to Althengstett, which is quite steep with a gradient of almost two percent, many trains had to be pushed. This made Althengstett station particularly important because additional push locomotives were decoupled and relocated there in order to be able to drive back to Calw. In addition, the double track section from Calw ended in Althengstett .

After only the Stuttgart – Weil der Stadt section was electrified in 1939 , the Weil der Stadt – Calw section including the Althengstett train station became increasingly less important in the following decades. Initially, not all passenger trains ran the entire Calw – Stuttgart route. In 1963 the second track between Calw and Althengstett was dismantled, which meant a further loss of importance for the station. From 1978 on there were no longer any through passenger trains and you could only travel directly from Althengstett station to Calw or Weil der Stadt.

On May 27, 1983, the last passenger train stopped at Althengstett station. Until 1988 the station was still served by freight traffic. After a landslide in the area of the nearby forest tunnel in March of the same year, the entire Calw – Weil section of the city, including the Althengstett station, was completely decommissioned and fell into disrepair in the following years.

Today the renovated reception building is used by several institutions and companies. The former goods shed has been expanded into a youth club. There are still three tracks of the track system, but some of them are overgrown and in poor condition.

Equipment and rail operations

Althengstett station had a reception building that housed a small signal box , among other things . There were five tracks that were connected to each other several times. Track 1 was the continuous line that tied the house platform . Track 2 was the direct continuation of the second Althengstett – Calw line, which was dismantled in 1963. There was a second platform between the two tracks, at least until 1969. However, since 1981 at the latest, this has no longer existed. Track 3 and 4 were shunting tracks or tracks that were used for goods handling. Track 4 connected the existing goods shed and was therefore also equipped with a weighbridge.

For a long time, track 5 served as an unloading track for tank wagons that transported faeces to Althengstett. These transports came from Stuttgart in particular, when there was no sewer system there. In Althengstett, as well as at several other train stations in the Stuttgart region, the faeces were sold to local farmers as fertilizer. For this purpose there was a collecting basin belonging to the city of Stuttgart, north of the railway embankment, into which the faeces could be drained. Today the filler neck of the pipeline to the former basin in the station area still exists. The basin and track 5 are no longer available today.

future

It is planned to reactivate the Weil der Stadt – Calw section. Instead of reopening the Althengstett station in its old form, a new single-track stop is to be built on the station area. This should be located to the west and therefore closer to the center of the village. Several planning approval decisions have already been made for the project and the state of Baden-Württemberg has already agreed to provide financial support. It is planned to reopen the line in 2023.
