Saxon postal mileage column (totality)
Saxon postal mileage column (totality) At the market
(map)
Marked 1725 (copy 1995) Copy of a Saxon distance column made of sandstone, marked 1725, with coat of arms, block of inscriptions and base. The column stands in a prominent place on the market square. The lettering on the column was incorrectly reproduced. The original of the coat of arms is in the town hall foyer and an equally faulty copy of the writing block on Hainmühlenweg. The first replica took place in 1928, the second replica in 1961 and the third replica in 1995 (Steinmetz Thomschke, Pulsnitz) of the column.

In 1722, the Electorate of Saxony began to erect the Saxon post-mile pillars. Elector Friedrich August I wanted to build a modern traffic and transport control system in the electorate in order to promote trade and economy. He entrusted Magister Adam Friedrich Zürner (1679 - 1742) with the implementation. The system of post mile pillars comprised distance pillars, quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars. The distance columns should be set up in the cities in front of the city gates, later only on the marketplaces. Quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars were set up along the Poststrasse. They received a consecutive numbering (row number), starting from the beginning of the measurement. The all-mile columns were set up outside the cities on the post roads at a distance of 1 mile (= 9.062 km). The distance pillars were marked with the monogram "AR" for "Augustus Rex", the Electoral Saxon and Polish-Lithuanian double coat of arms and the Polish royal crown. The full mile, half mile columns and quarter milestones were all similarly labeled, none of them had a coat of arms, but the monogram "AR". The distances were given in hours (1 hour = ½ post mile = 4.531 km).

This mile system was the first European traffic management system. The pillar considered here is of great importance in the history of traffic as part of the nationally significant postal system.

The Elstra cemetery consists of an old part in the north, laid out in 1863, and a new part in the south, laid out in 1920. The old part is surrounded by a wall made of plastered masonry and marked by a crossroads with cut linden avenues. The morgue and a burial chapel form the endpoints of Querallee. The burial chapel was built for Joh. Christ, who died in 1868. Eleonore Cramer (daughter of the city judge Joh. Gottl. Cramer). A row of linden trees (verifiable in 1883) stands parallel to the eastern wall of the cemetery. The preserved enclosures of the graves on the cemetery wall and in Querallee are remarkable. A war grave with a granite wall and a memorial plaque bears the inscription: “They died on April 20 and 26, 1945”. The names of the dead follow. The old part of the cemetery is well preserved in its structure and equipment and is a testament to a simple outer city cemetery with a crossroads. This is its significance in terms of garden history.

The new part of the cemetery is spatially structured by rows of linden trees (with freely growing crowns) and has an enclosure wall made of granite stone masonry on the eastern border and an enclosure wall made of plastered brick masonry on the western border. The new cemetery section is significantly shaped by the rows of linden trees with picturesque, wide-spreading crowns and has a landscape-shaping significance.

Detailed memorial texts

  1. The access path, which runs in a wide arch, leads to the castle forecourt, from which the driveway and a staircase of the covered castle entrance can be reached. The palace garden is essentially on two levels. The lower level shows the remains of old trees near the castle. The regular position of the linden and chestnut trees can be traced back to a baroque basic structure, the crown shape of the trees indicates that the crowns were once cut. In the northeast of the castle there is a rectangular area, one long side of which is bordered by a row of trees (linden, beech). Rows of trees can be seen in the relatively dense tree population on the plateau area. A longitudinal axis seems to have its end point in a small bastion (viewing point). This bastion is also in line with the castle garden gate and thus in a straight line to Lessinggasse, which leads to the market. The Meilenblatt from 1803 (Berlin copy), on which a basic geometric structure of the palace garden can be seen on both levels, is informative. Several small arched terraces are marked in the southeast of the former castle on the plan. The former structure of the gardens can still be traced in the relief and the enclosure, even if more recent garden designs have blurred these strict contours and the castle, which was built around the turn of the century, with its lively facade structure, radiates little symmetry. The pond was rebuilt after 1990. The white sandstone sculpture depicts Hercules carrying the globe. It stands near the gate of the castle entrance. The original of the figure made in 1954 and displayed here and labeled "Copie / RK / 1954" is attributed to Balthasar Permoser . Today the palace garden with its different time layers appears more like a large villa garden. A highlight is an oak that dominates the upper level of the garden as a solitary tree. The lookout point at the southeast corner of the castle park, which can be described as curiosity, has lost its function due to the extensive renovation of the castle garden with single-family houses. There is a terrace in front of the castle in the southeast. The horticultural decoration of the area near the castle, which can be proven in photos, was lost. The old manor with its inner courtyard and outer kitchen garden areas has largely been preserved; sections of the enclosure wall made of quarry stone are in the north and west of the area. A pigeon house is in the yard. The two levels of the baroque structure of the garden and the old tree population, which also preserves the old basic structures, characterize the park of the former manor park, which today is more like a villa garden. The park is determined by the New Palace, built in villa style in 1903, and shows the connection between old, grown garden structures and the concept of a villa garden that was modern around 1900. In this transitional role, the garden-historical value of the park that is handed down today exists.
  2. On what is probably the oldest map of Prietitz in 1783, the grounds of the manor with manor house, outbuildings and two gardens surrounded by walls were shown. The Meilenblatt from 1804 (Berlin copy) still shows a relatively regular division in the western garden. In the 19th century, the history of the old manor and estate park Prietitz is connected with the possessions of the von Einsiedel family. Under Detlev Carl von Einsiedel (1737 Dresden - 1810 Mückenberg) the Wolkenburg castle garden was redesigned to a castle park in the English style. His son, Detlev von Einsiedel, married Johanna Friederike Louise von der Schulenburg, who owned the Prietitz manor after 1800. So Prietitz came to him. He also owned the manors Wolkenburg, Ehrenberg near Waldheim and Mückenberg (to which Lauchhammer and its ironworks belonged). Probably under the Saxon Cabinet Minister Detlev von Einsiedel and his wife, the estate park, which has been handed down today, was laid out in the landscape style in the first half of the 19th century. Their only daughter, Johanna Auguste, married Carl Heinrich Sahrer von Sahr. From 1848 the corridors of the Prietitz manor were leased and the family moved to Ehrenberg. The largest area of the estate park lies in the west of the manor house on a plateau, which is characterized on its edges by dense, tall, old trees (primarily beech and linden). This part is known as the "Oberpark". The park wall (quarry stone masonry with granite cover plates) running along the foot of the slope of the plateau is barely noticeable from the central area of the park, so that the enclosure looks like a scenic aha. A small hill, the so-called duel hill, is located in the southwest area of the plateau and is partially supported by retaining walls made of quarry stone masonry. Likewise, on the western edge of the plateau, a bank area is surrounded by a retaining wall. There are three benches with stone plinths in the park area. The former stone supports have been replaced by wooden slats. A sandstone pedestal, formerly provided with a sundial on its south side, carried a sandstone putti that disappeared after 1964. By using the central park area as a festival meadow and soccer field, some important solitary and edge trees were felled after 1945. A former ice cellar near the northern economic gate was filled in around 1950. From the eastern castle gate (with two gate pillars, without a gate wing) an access path leads up to the semicircular castle forecourt. In the lower part of the park on the northeast side of the castle, which is known as the "Unterpark", there was a pond that was filled in after 1960. A stone water trough, fed by Röhrwasser, stood in the northeast of the castle and is now in the village. On the north high park wall (plastered quarry stone masonry, renovated) stood outbuildings. A pair of linden trees mark the northwest corner of the park, a large old linden tree the southwest corner. At each of these two corners, the park is accessed through a gate with a single-leaf door made of iron bars. Another park gate with pillars and a wooden gate is located in the south of the palace forecourt. The visual links in the east of the palace are impaired by the densely packed trees that were planted after 1945. The monument value of the facility is derived from the terrain situation (plateau area). The park design (trees, paths and fencing) connects the park with the surrounding landscape in a special way. As a landscape park of the 18th / 19th century, it is valuable in terms of landscape design and, in particular, due to its extraordinary location, as well as of local historical importance.
