Totality of Royal Saxon Triangulation (" European degree measurement in the Kingdom of Saxony "); Station 66 Lessingturm | Am Hutberg 27 (map) |
1870 (renovation 2010) | Triangulation column; Second order station, significant in terms of surveying history and technology history. The survey point was on the northwest corner pillar of the barrier of the observation tower on the Kamenzer Hutberg. According to a letter dated May 14, 1870, the building permit was granted. Since the view from the platform of the almost 18-meter-high stone tower was restricted by tree growth and was only possible in two directions, the tower was raised by 6 meters in mid-2010. The tower including the triangulation column was extensively renovated. The appearance of the column was changed and no longer corresponds to the original column, but is located in the old location. From 1862 to 1890 a land survey was carried out in the Kingdom of Saxony , in which two triangular networks were formed. On the one hand, there is the network for grade measurement in the Kingdom of Saxony (network I. class / order) with 36 points and the royal Saxon triangulation (network II. Class / order) with 122 points. The surveying columns set for this purpose remained almost entirely in their original locations. They are an impressive testimony to the history of land surveying in Germany and in Saxony. The system of surveying columns of both orders is in its entirety a cultural monument of supraregional importance. |

Water tank and valve chamber including almost completely preserved fittings | At the vineyard (in a garden) (map) |
1894 | Clinkered exterior facade with access door and two ventilation openings, essential testimony to the Kamenz drinking water supply until 1928, of local and technological importance. Water tank 200 m³ capacity, inner diameter 12 m, maximum height 3.40 m, inner ceiling designed as a hemisphere and plastered, floor and side walls coated up to a height of 2 m. In the middle a round, almost closed wall of the same height. In front of the interior there is a sliding chamber with almost complete fittings (inlet, handwheels, drain) and access door (wooden, arched). The entrance has a clinker exterior facade (yellow brickwork with red decorative clinker bricks) with two ventilation openings. The area around the container is used as a leasehold garden, currently a storage room. The structure is in good condition, only the coating is defective in some places. The outside visible hill above the vault is green, with ventilation. The tank was probably used to supply the city of Kamenz with drinking water until 1929, after which it was mainly used to fill the city pool. That became obsolete when it closed in the 1980s. From now on, use only by individual garden tenants. |

Saxon post mile pillars (totality); Post mileage | Bönischplatz (map) |
Marked 1725 (restoration 1910, 1954/1955, 1961, 1976, 2008, 2010) | Distance column, important in terms of traffic history. Electoral Saxon distance pillar made of sandstone and designated 1725. It was originally built as a gate pillar in front of the Königsbrücker Tor. The Pirna stonemason Johann Georg Petzold made them. It shows distances to the west on two pages. The reversed post horn marks are noticeable. After the Königsbrücker Tor was demolished, the column initially remained in place. It was restored around 1910 and 1954/55. Around 1961 it was moved to the north-western footpath of Böhnischplatz and in 1976 to its current location. In the same year the column was restored by master stonemason Peschel. After the restoration in 2008, the column was destroyed in a traffic accident at the roundabout there on September 30, 2009, repeatedly restored by master stonemason Demski and put up again on May 6, 2010. In 1722, the Electorate of Saxony began to erect the Saxon post-mile pillars. Elector Friedrich August I wanted to build a modern traffic and transport control system in the electorate in order to promote trade and economy. He commissioned Adam Friedrich Zürner (1679 1742) to do this. The post mile pillar system comprised distance pillars, quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars. The distance columns should be set up in the cities in front of the city gates, later only on the marketplaces. Quarter milestones, half and full mile pillars were set up along the Poststrasse. They received a consecutive numbering (row number), starting from the beginning of the measurement. The all-mile columns were set up outside the cities on the post roads at a distance of 1 mile (= 9.062 km). The distance pillars were marked with the monogram "AR" for "Augustus Rex", the Electoral Saxon and Polish-Lithuanian double coat of arms and the Polish royal crown. The full mile, half mile columns and quarter milestones were all similarly labeled, none of them had a coat of arms, but the monogram "AR". The distances were given in hours (1 hour = ½ post mile = 4.531 km). This mile system was the first European traffic management system. The pillar considered here is of great importance in the history of traffic as part of the nationally significant postal system. |

Barracks of the 13th Royal Saxon Infantry Regiment; nine barracks buildings and partially preserved enclosure wall on the south-western boundary of the barracks area | Garrisonsplatz 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 11, 13, 14 and 15 (map) |
Marked 1900 | See also Macherstraße 45, 51, 53, 55, 57, 59 and 61 (object 09227816), of military and architectural significance. Garnisonsplatz 3 (former house 45, officer's casino) was deleted from the list of monuments on October 29, 2002. Reason: The outside appearance of the building is already severely impaired due to newer windows, completely gutted inside (use as a restaurant and bowling alley), and advertising system at the entrance area that is not to scale. Monument status is available, but not enough to justify monument worthiness. The decision to delete was made in agreement with the Kamenz District Office. |

Chimney of the former Noske cloth factory and wall with memorial plaque | Herrental 9 (map) |
After 1945 | Structural evidence of a former factory that was used in 1944/45 as a branch of the Groß-Rosen concentration camp, historical value and significance for the landscape.
1434 first mention of the manor mill. At the end of the 18th century it was used by the city's white tanners. The city council sold the manor mill as the last mill owned by the city in 1831. A group of master cloth makers built a four-story factory in 1845. It takes up the sole of the Herrental almost in full width. The still preserved square factory chimney is to be regarded as a technical monument. In 1922 the Herrenmühle factory is still in operation. In August 1944, the factory rooms of the closed cloth factory Gebr. Noske & Co. in Herrental number 9 are expanded into a camp for concentration camp prisoners who work for Elster GmbH. At the end of October, work began on setting up the facility as a camp for prisoners. The textile machines are dismantled and set aside, the boilers are put back into operation for several days. Fitters grate the windows and barbed wire is pulled. Four individual items are set up to guard the camp. There are no barracks on the premises, the prisoners sleep four to five people next to each other on three floors in three-story wooden plank beds. A first aid station will be set up in the attic. On November 1st, the camp “goes into operation”. The repair of the heating system is of central importance for the construction of the warehouse. From the outset, prisoners are expected to be killed. Kamenz does not have its own crematorium. Since the transport of the corpses to Dresden or Groß-Rosen is too time-consuming, the commandantur of the Groß-Rosen concentration camp instructs that the boiler house of the factory be used for the purpose of cremation. The contract between Gebr. Noske & Co. and Elster GmbH on the use of the heating system can be regarded as an expression of German thoroughness, which, however, seems almost perverse. On March 10, 1945, the Kamenz subcamp of the Groß-Rosen concentration camp in the former cloth factory Gebr. Noske & Co. is evacuated. The roof structure and the upper two floors of the former manor mill are demolished on January 30, 1967. |

Justkirche with furnishings (including eight boxes with wedding jewelry on the north and south sides of the nave), cemetery enclosure, six tombs in the interior of the church, nine tombs in the cemetery and all the wrought-iron enclosures preserved in the cemetery as well as a war memorial for those who fell in the First World War | Koenigsbrücker Strasse (map) |
1850-1910 (tomb); 1850–1923 (grave complex); after 1918 (war memorial) | Structurally and locally of importance. The rectangular nave is followed by the retracted choir, separated by a triumphal arch, vaults in the choir preserved, frescoes in the chancel from around 1390. Eight boxes with jewelry for the wedding of the dead on the north and south sides of the nave are included. The idea of an after-death wedding is one of the most curious customs in burial. It goes back to the prehistoric thought of the indispensable transmission of life after earthly death, which found its expression in Christianity in the “heavenly wedding” as soon as an unmarried person was buried. That applied to children, virgins, and bachelors. Bridal crowns were used as jewelry for virgins. Myrtle wreaths and veils, for bachelors myrtle bouquets. In addition, other jewelry was apparently also in use. Sometimes this custom has been dismissed as a superstition. Some of the boxes attached here contain the handwritten memorial inscriptions and are not easily accessible.
In the interior of the church on the right at the entrance there are six tombs that have been moved from the cemetery of the Kamenz Church of St. Mary:

Volkspark; Park and memorial stone for Dr. med. Kurt Berger | Lessingplatz (map) |
2nd half of the 19th century (Volkspark); after 1956 (memorial stone) | Significant in terms of open space planning, urban history and plant culture history. The park, today the Volkspark, emerged from the former art and trade gardening of Wilhelm Weisse (1846–1916). The facility was founded by Weisse as a tree nursery and viewing garden and later expanded. The grid-shaped network of paths and the rectangular quarter design are still reminiscent of the former cultivation beds. In 1938 the plant came into the possession of the city of Kamenz and was opened to the public in 1954. The granite memorial stone for Kurt Berger is located in the park.
Establishment of the Volkspark Kamenz garden monument (Ragnhild Kober-Carrière, 2014): The Volkspark, which emerged from the Wilhelm Weißes tree nursery, borders Lessingplatz in the east (formerly “König-Albert-Platz”, around 1900) and a small one in the south Green area (formerly “rose garden”) as well as to the entrance terrace of the Lessinghaus (1929). To the west, on Poststrasse, opposite, is the White Garden (former private garden of Wilhelm Weisse). In the north it is connected via a short path to Robert-Koch-Platz (formerly “Lessingplatz”, around 1900). Since the basic structure (grid of paths) of the former tree nursery has been preserved, the neighboring facilities, which are offset from it, are ideally linked to the Volkspark. The public park created a coherent open space system that connects the train station and the city center and is of importance in terms of open space planning and city history in the context of the urban planning efforts of the 1930s and 1950s. The valuable and special woody stock that can now be referred to as a grove, which emerges from the former rich offer of the Wilhelm Weißes tree nursery, is also of historical importance for plant culture. |

Garnisonsplatz 3 (former house 45, officer's casino) was deleted from the list of monuments on October 29, 2002. Reason: The building's external appearance is already severely impaired due to newer windows, completely gutted inside (used as a restaurant and bowling alley), and advertising system at the entrance area that is not to scale. Monument status is available, but not enough to justify monument worthiness. The decision to delete was made in agreement with the Kamenz District Office. |

↑ Description and justification of the garden monument hospital garden Barmherzigkeitsstift (Ragnhild Kober-Carrière, 2014):
The early hospital complex (1826) with front garden, former green courtyard area, monastery garden (kitchen garden with fruit trees) and monastery park has been preserved in its basic structure and area. In the course of its long use as a hospital (until 2000), changes were made to the outside area. The original front garden design gave way in 1894 to a view that was modern at the turn of the century. The existing conifers probably still bear witness to it. As a result of multiple additions and demolitions of parts of the hospital's building, the enclosed, once green courtyard, which could be used by patients in particular as a protected outside area, was also lost. The meadow rising to the west has been preserved, although it no longer has any old fruit trees. The axial path that stretched from the hospital to the mausoleum is presumed to be in the ground. The birch, acacia and plane trees (documented in 1827), originally laid out in the English style, were replanted after 1900. This former abbey park, with its foliage (oak, linden, hornbeam, ash, sycamore maple and horse chestnut) forms the essential vegetable substance. A conifer delivery (1902) by the Königl. Purveyors to the court art gardener Weisse in Kamenz, which he gave to the hospital. It can be assumed that the changes around 1900 took place with his assistance. The Bönisch mausoleum, built in the style of a Greek temple of the Antes, is both a memorial site and a focal point of the gardens. This early hospital garden, which was intended for the stay, the convalescence and the care of the patients, is of great testimony value and socio-historical significance. In its basic layout as well as the combination of kitchen garden and park, it corresponds to the principle of a classic villa garden. In terms of horticultural history, it has a special meaning in the basic structure that can still be read today.
Mercy pen (according to Gurlitt, p. 219/220) 1824 by the doctor Dr. Bönisch justified. Expanded in 1828, the hospital on the dam is an elongated rectangular building with little protruding central structure, the old part and a newer wing (1828?). The higher central building is divided by four Ionic pillars that support a flat gable. The cornice with a tooth cut. Five-axis extensions in the middle with three arched windows each, a door with an outside staircase in the lower middle. Narrow hallway well developed. Four Tuscan columns support a cross vault as a crossing. Finally, a bust of Lessing, based on a model by Christian Friedrich Krull (1748–87) in Braunschweig: above it in front of the circular staircase window with a golden oak wreath a clock in a lyre bearing an eagle. In the corridor to the left there is an altar-like monument from 1613. Of the interior, only the church hall (chapel) is worth mentioning as a rectangular three-sided room in the axis of the upper floor with a high throat. Corinthian pillars painted on the walls. Altar in the chapel (wood, 1.40 m high, 1.37 m wide, formerly brightly painted, now painted white), composite columns on the sides, over which the straight cornice cranks. The crowning glory is probably not old. Oval opening between pillars, now without a picture, around 1600, supposedly from the main church. In the chapel the following pictures: portraits of the children of pastor primarius Johann Gottfried Lessing, portraits of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Maria with the child. Bust of King Friedrich August. Memorial of the Johann Gottfried Boenisch Mausoleum (according to Gurlitt p. 220) about 330 cm in the square measuring crypt. Architrave, main cornice and the simple granite gable. Consoles of the cornice made of brick. Front opening with two granite columns. On the frieze a board (inscribed: "To the fallen asleep"). Inside without vault. A cast iron plate with rosettes in the corners (inscribed "To the god-blessed founder of this institution, Doctor and Knight dKSCiv.Ver.Ordens Johann Gottfried Boenisch. The palm was handed to him on July 25, 1831 in his 54th year of life"). A semicircular window in each of the side walls. Von Bönisch himself asked the city council in June 1831 that he be buried in the monastery park, in order to “stay close to the institution and its patients even in death”. The request was granted, on July 28, 1831, Bönisch was buried on the monastery grounds with great sympathy. The exact time of the erection of the mausoleum is unknown.
1821 Bönisch's first efforts to build a hospital for the poor, no support from the city. 1823 Bönisch's appeal for donations in all major German newspapers, by the end of 1824 around 6,000 thalers had been collected. 1824 Purchase of the property on Dammteich and laying of the foundation stone (September 10th), masonry and carpentry work was carried out by the Kamenz craftsmen Mörbitz and Technritz, in 1826 the ceremonial inauguration and opening of the hospital (January 3rd) with initially 15 beds, first consultation with the monastery administration deputation. 1826–1830 Extension of the hospital by adding side wings. 1834 Corridors, bathroom, morgue and laundry room are added. Further additions until 1860 (including bathrooms and rooms for the mentally ill). 1870 The pond in front of the hospital was drained as a result of the construction of the Radeberg-Kamenz railway line. 1904 Establishment of an operating room. 1910 Extension on the north side of the hospital. Appointment to district hospital; Extension of a polyclinic wing. 1975 New construction of the central clinical laboratory on the hospital grounds. 1980 Establishment of a polyclinic on the monastery premises. 2000 move to the new hospital, since then the mercy pen has been empty. -
↑ Description and justification of the garden monument (Ragnhild Kober-Carrière, 2014):
The central area of the forest park is with the Lessingturm (1864), the Hutberghotel (1895) and the so-called "Alpenbeet" (laid out in 1893 by Wilhelm Weisse) as the beginning of the Hutberg - To see plants. The further design of the Hutberg in Kamenz took place in the course of the general, around 1900 customary and modern conception of the beautification of places for excursions close to the city. They can be traced back to the initiatives of beautification associations and city leaders. In Kamenz, the area of the Hutberg is thanks to the commitment of the city council of Kamenz under the leadership of the mayor Dr. Feig (1886–1914 Mayor), City Councilor Voigt (1914–1918 Deputy Mayor), Dr. Dittrich (1918–1925 Mayor) and Dr. Gebauer (1925–1943 mayor) came into municipal possession. The upper town garden master Ernst Hilscher added to the park in the north-eastern area from 1925. In the east, a tree nursery will later be included in the park. The forest park has developed into the most important local park area over a period of 75 years. The special involvement of the Kamenz art and trade gardener Wilhelm Weisse, who contributed significantly to the development of the forest park in terms of both design and botanicality through his extensive experimental plantings, sets it apart from other forest park facilities. In addition to various deciduous trees, Weiße has planted and acclimatized foreign azaleas, rhododendrons and conifers as well as his own varieties on the Hutberg. These special woody plantings are of historical importance for plant culture. The so-called blue forest, a partially existing stock of 100-year-old blue spruce, is a rarity in Germany. With its system of paths, the individual squares (Alpenrosenplatz, Eibenplatz, Lärchenplatz, Singerplatz, Ulmenplatz) as well as the interesting combinations of trees, avenues and lines of sight, the Hutberganlage also has a special garden-artistic quality and is therefore important for landscape design. -
↑ Description and justification of the garden monument Beethovenstraße 1 (Ragnhild Kober-Carrière, 2014):
The garden laid out when the villa was built has largely been preserved, pathways are presumed to be in the ground. The property is essentially shaped by the woody population (linden tree at the gate, lilac and hazelnut in the front garden, beech, hawthorn, sweet cherry, yew, spruce and rhododendron in the garden). The fence, which is ingrown by a hedge, has a diagonal mesh of corrugated wire and a red clinker base. There are three granite pillars at the gate and gate (metal construction). There are yellow clinker walls with red clinker strips on the three property boundaries to the neighbors. A metal grille separates the garden from the driveway to the coach house. A slightly elevated terrace is accessed from the garden via two stairs with granite steps and sandstone cheeks. A staircase with six granite steps and metal railings leads from this to the veranda. Villa, coach house, enclosure and garden form a unit on the small property and have architectural and garden historical significance. The effect of the trees surrounding the house is of particular design value. -

Evangelical burial church St. Just (Königsbrücker Strasse). Hall church with retracted polygonal choir. The first mention in 1377 obviously refers to changes to the existing building. Fire in 1542, then renewal. In the 17th century built-in galleries, roof turrets in the 19th century. Restoration in 1911. Plastered building with surrounding main cornice and buttresses on the choir. Gable roof, hipped in the east. The west gable is steeper than today's roof. Two pointed arch windows with tracery on each side of the nave. Of the five choir windows, the two western ones have been blocked since the 14th century. The main portal on the north side is closed in a pointed arch, heavily profiled with round bars and grooves. The flat-roofed hall inside with a surrounding wooden gallery. Hall and choir separated by a triumphal arch, the arches of which have a late Romanesque profile. Choir with ribbed vaults and a complete fresco-secco painting, around 1380 (exposed 1935–37). Significant evidence of the Bohemian influence on Lausitz (compare the painted choir vaults of the town church in Herzberg / Elster, Brandenburg). On the triumphal arch Christ and the wise and foolish virgins, on the vault caps angels. On the north wall in registers scenes from the life of Mary, on the south wall the Passion of Christ. Between the scenes, perspective architectural painting in the style of contemporary Bohemian painting. Representations of saints on the wall surfaces of the clogged windows. Marien Altar, around 1500 (until 1770 in the Annenkirche), probably by the master of the Marien Altar of the Marienkirche in Kamenz. In the middle shrine of the splendid carved altar the Coronation of the Virgin in front of a gallery on which angels play music. On the side, as half-figures, the four church fathers. The scene is framed by delicate tendrils. In the side wings scenes from the life of the Virgin in front of Goldgrund. Continuation in painted pictures on the outside. Above the shrine on pedestals Mary on the crescent moon and two female saints, the left St. Barbara. Crucifix, 15th century, in the triumphal arch. Little Owl Organ, 1936. -
↑ Description and justification of the garden monument Kirchhof St. Marien (Ragnhild Kober-Carrière, 2014):
The churchyard surrounding the St. Marien Church is causally connected to the church and its base is preserved. The location of the church on the south-east edge of the city required a fortified structure in the churchyard. The catechism church upstream here has the function of a fortified church. On the city side, from the north, the cemetery is accessed by a three-part renaissance gate system (arched openings, cornice with the inscription Isa. 2, 3, three attached gables and wrought-iron gate and door leaves framed in gray). Two more wrought iron gates are on the high northwest wall. This wall has niches on the inside with valuable tombstones. In the east and south, retaining walls with attached parapet walls made of plastered quarry stone masonry border the churchyard. An elongated staircase on the eastern slope (old Wiesaer Kirchweg, which already existed in the Middle Ages) leads to a gate in the churchyard wall (two pillars made of quarry stone, wooden slat door). At the northwest corner of the diaconate there is another gate (bar grating) that leads into the diaconate's garden. At the south corner of the churchyard there is a small, elevated viewing point, the so-called “Lessingplatz” with a stone table, which can be reached via two flights of stairs. Old locust trees overshadow this small plateau, from which there is a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape. In the parapet wall of a viewing platform on the western wall is a stone with the inscription: "1546 A strong castle is our God 1946". There are two stone benches here. The current routing can be traced back to 1912. Two linden trees frame a burial chapel in the south-west corner of the church. The churchyard is causally connected with the main church and the catechism church as well as with the fortifications of the city and with them forms an inseparable unit in which its historical and urban significance lies. As a burial place, it has local historical significance. The two viewing areas and the paths running along the parapet walls are to be highlighted as special viewing elements. -
^ Dehio - Handbook of German Art Monuments / Saxony Volume 1:
Evangelical Marienkirche (Lessinggäßchen). Hall church built at the highest point of the city with an excellent effect in the city silhouette and with very rich furnishings. Building history: For the year 1225 there is a record of a church consecrated to the apostles Philip and James, but which is said to have been rebuilt in another location after a fire in 1275. 1396 installation of a Marian altar, then referred to as "ecclesia parochialis beatae virginis". Foundations uncovered in 1887 point to a previous building, the nave of which was still in existence when today's choir was built in the last decades of the 14th century. Simultaneously with the choir, construction of the sacristy, perhaps also the tower on the north-west corner. Destruction in 1429 during the Hussite Wars, then further construction according to a different plan. After 1430 construction of the four-aisled hall, after 1450 vaults in the choir and nave, the brick gable around 1500. 1793 Renewal of the tower dome. 1887 Restoration and redesign of the interior in the sense of “complete style unity” by Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel. 1908 Woldemar Kandler remodeled the galleries. 1992 Start of extensive restoration.
Description: Hall church with retracted three-bay choir, 5/8 end. In the north-west corner the massive tower. On the south side between the choir and the south nave is the sacristy. Two lobbies on the north side. The choir made of regular granite blocks, the nave made of rubble stones, sandstone structures. Stepped buttresses, only the northern one at the head of the choir with plastic decorations and small pinnacles. High lancet windows with rich tracery, usually four lanes. Portals on the north choir wall and on the north side of the nave and on the west side. These with rich profiles. At the west portal crossed framework in the apex of the pointed arch. Two parallel but unequal gable roofs over the nave. Brick gable with arched blind arcades. At the east gable of the southern nave roof connects to the hipped roof above the choir. The tower in the basement is square, above two still Gothic octagonal floors with a stair tower on the side and a crenellated crown as a conclusion, above it two more compact floors. Baroque hood end with lantern.
Inside: The three naves with a choir in the extension of the middle, slightly wider nave are reminiscent of the original plan. The fourth, northern nave provides generous space expansion. The floor of the hall rises considerably from west to east. Slender octagonal pillars support the net vault without capitals. Longitudinal divider arches, the profiles of which develop from the pillars. On the west side of the nave above a rich star vault the organ gallery (1479), its parapet wall from 1890. On the west side of the north nave council gallery above star vault (around 1480) with a wooden structure from the 18th century. Triumphal arch to the choir with net vaults. Celebrant seats on the south wall: three granite seating niches embedded in the wall, the decorative shapes partly made of sandstone. Arcade arches with tracery above the seats, a head as a console on the outer sides at fighter height. In addition, approaches for no longer existing eyelashes. Sacrament niche with its architectural frame reminiscent of a monstrance. On the south wall sacristy door, above it a wooden gallery on granite consoles. On the north wall three profiled door arches, the two east walled up.
Medieval furnishings: Of the 20 or so altars from the pre-Reformation period, two have been preserved in the Marienkirche where they were first installed. Magnificent St. Mary's altar (main altar) from 1519, restoration in 1638 by Johann Georg Reuth from Kamenz and in 1909. Winged altar with rich tendrils and cracks. In the predella Last Supper with fully carved figures in narrative representation. Gilded leaf and tendril veil above. Middle shrine: In the center, larger than life, the crowned Mother of God. On her right the Evangelist Johannes, on the left Johannes d. T., angels about it. Preciously carved canopies over the figures. In the wings Andreas and Christophorus. Five figures in a pyramidal arrangement: in the middle a bishop (probably Donatus), on his right the hll. Katharina and Petrus, on the left the hll. Laurentius and Paulus, above a knight (probably St. George). Michaelis altar (side altar), dated 1498, in the north nave. Predella with half-figures framed by arch architecture: in the middle Anna Selbdritt, on the left probably St. Hubertus, right Johannes d. T. In the shrine carved and mounted figure of the Archangel Michael weighing souls, wings with two images each, top left Apostle Andreas and King Sigismund, below Evangelist Johannes and Pope Gregory, above right Peter and Paul, below the Holy. Katharina and Barbara. On the reverse, in tempera painting, St. Catherine of Siena before the Man of Sorrows. Simple granite baptism, probably from the previous church, in an octagonal goblet shape. Triumphal cross group, around 1400. After restoration (1935) attached to the triumphal arch again. Quality wooden figures in life size. Crucifix, around 1500, on the south wall of the nave, good job. Small reliquary cabinet, around 1380, in the sacristy. Inside two arm reliquaries, on the inside of the doors painted scenes on a gold background: Christ on the Mount of Olives and the Crucifixion, fine painting under Bohemian influence. Cross reliquary, 1st half of the 15th century, in the sacristy. Wooden cross with arms of equal length, the ends in the shape of a cloverleaf, opening at the crossing point, replica of a goldsmith's work. Winged altars, dated 1505, in the sacristy. Wooden box, in the middle a portrait of Christ as Man of Sorrows. Renaissance ornaments on the wings around 1560. Christ Child (Bornkindl) around 1500, from a Mechelen workshop. Carved figure of the Christ Child standing on a cushion, the right hand raised in blessing, the left holding a globe with a high cross. Beautiful fittings, around 1480, on the door to the north porch.
Protestant furnishings: octagonal wooden pulpit on granite console, 1566, by Andreas Dreßler from Kamenz. On the pulpit in arched representations from the Old and New Testament: Expulsion from Paradise, Annunciation, Birth of Christ, Crucifixion, the Risen One. Arch fields separated by carved angels. Octagonal sound cover with carved half-figures. The stairs are bent twice. On the parapet are the scenes from the Old Testament typologically corresponding to the scenes from the New Testament: Passover meal, Messianic prophecy, Abraham with the three men, Isaac's sacrifice, Jonas. Under the stairs: Daniel and Habakkuk. Three-part painted epitaph, 1543, by the Cranach student Wolf Krodel from Schneeberg, in the sacristy. Middle panel: Crucified, donors' coat of arms in the corners. The outer panels: judgment and grace, on the left death and the devil drive Adam into hell, Moses, above that Christ as judge of the world, the fall of man, and antithetical on the right panel, Christ as savior. Painted epitaph of Boos von Oelsnitz, 1554, by Andreas Dreßler, in the sacristy. Depiction of the Last Judgment, in the lower part the founder and the deceased. Choir stalls, 1560, on the north wall of the choir. Four seats separated by cheeks, the backs covered with flasers, this one from Nuremberg. Panel painting, after 1560, on the south wall of the nave, depicting the crucifixion. Two-seater stalls, 1561, next to the Michaelis altar in the north aisle, as with the choir stalls covered with flasers. Braunau rulership, around 1580, on the north wall of the nave. ↑ Description and justification of the garden monument (Ragnhild Kober-Carrière, 2014):
The former private garden of the art and commercial gardener Wilhelm Weisse (1846-1916) is open to the public and is known as the "Wilhelm Weisse Garden". A finely structured network of paths makes it possible to observe the valuable small trees, some of which emerge from the original garden, which was also used as a show garden under Wilhelm Weisse. White, who achieved a high reputation in the field of the introduction, acclimatization and breeding of conifers at home and abroad, dedicated a blue spruce variety to King Albert (Picea pungens "King Albert"). The king planted a blue spruce (of this variety?) On August 7, 1892 in Wilhelm Weisse's garden. A stone tablet at the foot of the tall, over 120-year-old tree commemorates this event. A group of copper beeches in the south-west corner of the garden shaded the garden. A reconstructed well house and a groundwater well are located in the center, a small square with a garden house (“Little Curiosity”) on the northwest corner. Due to its valuable woody stock, some of which goes back to plantings by Wilhelm Weisse, but some of which were also replanted during the restoration of the garden in 1999, the historical plant culture value. In connection with the neighboring public green spaces (Volkspark as a former tree nursery area Wilhelm Weißes, Lessingplatz and Robert-Koch-Platz) it is important for the open space structure of the city. As the garden of Wilhelm Weisse's villa, it is of significance in terms of garden history. -
^ Dehio - Handbook of German Art Monuments / Saxony Volume 1:
Evangelical Monastery Church of St. Annen (school square). Stately towerless hall church, which today stands free on a square due to the destruction of the monastery buildings by fire. After 1493 outside the city wall, probably built by Wolff Hrabisch from Kamenz together with the convent buildings. Included in the city wall with the monastery at the beginning of the 16th century. Start of construction on the choir, completion of the nave probably in 1512. From 1565 the monastery was used as a Protestant town school, the church was set up for Protestant worship in the Sorbian language - Wendish Church. The roof structure was destroyed in the town fire in 1842, but the interior was largely preserved. Restoration by 1850 with the help of Gottfried Semper. The windows on the south side were installed, the bell crown was erected over the west gable and the interior was furnished.
Plastered quarry stone building with an elongated choir facing slightly south from the axis, this one with a 3/8 end. Steep saddle roof, on the west and east side of the nave, a gable decorated with brick blind arcades. Buttresses also support the building on the west facade. Large closed windows in the pointed arch, in the nave in three parts without tracery, in the choir two-part with simple tracery. The main portal on the west facade, as well as the portal in the southwest corner of the choir with late Gothic profiles.
The interior of the three-aisled, four-bay hall is bright and spacious. Regular parallel rib vaults develop over slender octagonal pillars made of sandstone. The three-bay choir, divided by a triumphal arch, also has net vaults. On the west wall there is a wooden organ gallery, after 1842.
Equipment: Five magnificent late Gothic winged altars and other figures define the room. Magnificent Anna altar decorated with delicate tendrils (main altar), from 1520. In the predella, whose assignment to the shrine is not certain, the representation of the Lord's Supper as a relief in a genre-like conception. On the side of the richly decorated horns the coat of arms of King Ludwig II of Hungary and his wife Maria, Archduchess of Austria. In the shrine of Anna Selbdritt protruding to the front. Mary in an emphatically representative pose as the Queen of Heaven, the Christ Child, who is holding Anna on her lap, handing a plate of fruit. The half-length figure of God the Father hovers in the clouds above the two enthroned figures. Below are two angels playing music on a console. In the rounded sides of the shrine two angels on candelabra-like pedestals, which together with the festive canopy architecture support the representative effect. In the side wings depictions of the Holy Tribe: one of the Marys in front of a gallery on which other ancestors are gathered, surrounded by their children. On the back of the wings are paintings that are based on graphic models (Schongauer and Dürer) and show influences from the Danube School: Judas kiss above left, Christ carrying the cross below, Christ before Pilate above right, crucifixion below. Marien Altar, around 1520. Beautiful carved altar with a pair of wings, stylistically similar to the Marien Altar in the former Franciscan Church (Trinity Church) in Görlitz. In the predella (which probably originally belonged to the clan altar) three church fathers, including Hieronymus, at lecterns. Excellent evidence for the beginning of the Renaissance conception in the Kamenz carved sculpture. In the shrine there is a graceful Madonna in a halo, surrounded by a pair of angels holding the crown. On the inside of the wings carved scenes from the life of Mary in a lively narrative style: Annunciation on top left, Visitation on top right, Birth of Christ below left, Adoration of the Three Magi below right. On the back, painted representations of great narrative richness: Annunciation to Joachim at the top left, Anna and Joachim at the Golden Gate at the top right, the engagement of Mary at the bottom left, Jesus in the temple at the bottom right. Kinship altar, around 1520. Relatively small winged altar, without predella, with detailed relief representation of the Holy Kinship, characterized by lively narrative features. In the middle shrine, Mary with the Christ child and St. Anna, above on a gallery Joseph and Anna's three men. In the two side wings Maria Cleophas and Maria Salome with their sons, above, also in galleries, further members of the Holy Tribe. The depiction from the central shrine is varied on the painted outside of the wings: on the left, under an arch, Maria and Joseph on a gallery, on the right Anna and her three men on a gallery. The richly framed and painted St. Francis altar, around 1515, is one of the most important carved altars in Kamenz and in its conception and formal treatment refers to the master of the St. Mary's altar in St. Mary's Church. In the predella a moving scene of the carrying of the cross, based on graphic templates (Martin Schongauer), which makes programmatic reference to the Franziskusvita dealt with in 13 scenes. Except in book art, there are hardly any parallels in Germany in terms of the intensity of the presentation. In the central shrine the stigmatization of St. Francis. The carved wing reliefs show the four most important stages in the life of St. Francis: Above left defection from the father and renunciation of worldly goods, below the dream of Pope Innocent III. , above right sermon before Pope Honorius III., below death of St. Francis. On the first transformation, eight painted scenes from the life of the saint, integrated into detailed landscapes, which are based on the woodcut cycle published in Nuremberg in 1512 on the life of St. Orient Francis to Bonaventure by Wolf Traut. According to the order given by Bonaventure, starting from the top left, then to the picture below, and then again in the top row, the following scenes are shown: vision of the crucifix, sermon before the seven brothers, foundation of the three Franciscan orders, temptation by the devil in the snow, the devil's plague in the house of Cardinal Leos, snake miracle, ordeal by fire before the Sultan, blood miracle before Pope Gregory IX. With the wings closed on four paintings, three helpers under flower threads based on Cranach's models. The scenic backgrounds on all panels are remarkable. Three-winged Savior Altar, marked 1513 (on the bottom of the shrine and the wings). In the center of the predella a now empty exposition, on the left the birth of Christ as a relief, on the right the Adoration of the Three Kings. Middle shrine with St. Francis of Assisi and St. Bernhard of Siena on both sides of the Salvator in an ascetic gesture. The principle of sequencing the figures in the shrine is continued on the inside of the wing, which is divided into two superimposed fields, in which, apart from the five Moroccan martyrs, two saints are depicted each at the bottom right. From top left to bottom right: King Sigismund, Willibrord, Kaiser (Charlemagne?), Bonaventure, Antonius of Padua, Clare of Assisi, martyrs. On the painted panels on the back of the wings there are two apostles facing each other with their attributes in a fine three-dimensional formation of the physiognomies and the robes. The monumental representation based on graphic models (Schongauer), but quite independent in its magnificence. Nine figures from a no longer existing apostle altar, around 1520 (on the west wall). Six figures from a no longer existing Franciscan altar, around 1520, the figures in Franciscan regalia, St. Francis receiving the stigmatization in relief in front of a rocky landscape with a chapel (on the west wall). Christ as Man of Sorrows, around 1520, in a moving portrayal. Late Gothic two-seat and one three-seat, the cheeks formed as tracery with a carved frieze at the top. Magnificently painted, three-part stalls, 1580, the painting probably by Andreas Dreßler, the parapet divided by pilasters, depictions of the virtues in arched panels, the birth of Christ, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension on the back wall, resurrection of the dead in the hollow above. Epitaph of the painter Andreas Dreßler, 1604, by himself, completed by Lorenz Göring, depicting the deceased's family in a painted frame, above the baptism of the Jordan, above the resurrected. Monument to Hans Burscher, 1619, oil on panel. In a painted frame Christ on the rainbow and the Last Judgment, above the family of the deceased. Memorial for Martha Mättig, 1637, frame made of roll and cartilage with rectangular writing plate and family coat of arms. Memorial plaque commemorating Johann Georg I, 1654. Three painted panels in frames decorated with volutes and angels' heads, below Johann Georg kneeling in front of a crucifix, above oval text panel, above the coat of arms of Electoral Saxony. Further epitaphs and paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries. Carved coat of arms of the Electorate of Saxony, 1682, on the organ loft, from the baroque prospect of the organ of St. Mary's Church destroyed in 1891. Wooden neo-Gothic pulpit from 1852. Mende organ, 1849/50, with a beautiful neo-Gothic prospect.
On the north and east side remains of the monastery wall belonging to the city fortifications. To the southwest of the monastery church, the former monastery gate (the gate opening for the monastery, which was initially outside the city fortifications), overbuilt with a residential building from the late 18th century.
