The Ashoro Station ( Jap. 足寄駅 , Ashoro-eki ) is a former railway station on the Japanese island of Hokkaido . It was located in Tokachi Sub-Prefecture in the Ashoro City area and operated from 1910 to 2006.

description

Aerial view (1977)

Ashoro was a connecting station on the Furusato Ginga line from Ikeda to Kitami . The station was in the city center and oriented from south to north, with the Ashoro Forest Railway branching off to the east . Before 2004 it owned three tracks for passenger traffic. These were located on the main platform and on a central platform , which was connected to the station building on the east side of the facility by an overpass . To the south there was a loading ramp for general goods traffic, while a freight track on the west side opened up a wood storage area.

After a renovation, the station presented itself as a two-track system with side platforms . They were part of the Ashoro Galaxy Hall 21 building complex , which spanned the railway line. The tracks were removed after the line was closed, while the platforms are still there. The most striking feature of the striking building is an observation tower. Integrated into the Ashoro Galaxy Hall 21 are a service station ( Michi no eki ) with a restaurant and bakery, a sales point for the Tokachi Bus bus company , an exhibition on regional railway history, an event hall and a museum with the stage costumes of the Ashoro folk singer Chiharu Matsuyama .

Reception building before the renovation (1989)

The Railway Authority (later the Ministry of Railways ) opened the station on September 22, 1910, along with the first section of the Abashiri Line from Ikeda to Rikubetsu . From 1912 the Abashiri line was called the Abashiri Main Line. In 1922, construction of the Ashoro forest railway began to promote forestry in the surrounding forests. Due to flooding, the work had to be interrupted for more than a year in 1923. After its opening in 1927, the length of the forest railway was 33.1 km. In 1945 the length of the main line had increased to 37.7 km, and a 10.1 km branch line was added. In 1949, 21.8 km were still in operation and in 1960 the forest railway was shut down.

In 1939 the reception building was replaced by a new building and in 1952 an overpass was added. In 1961, the Abashiri main line was renamed the Chikoho line. For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways stopped handling goods on September 10, 1982, and checked baggage on February 1, 1984. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . The local private railway company Hokkaidō Chihoku Kōgen Tetsudō took over the route on June 4, 1989 and renamed it Furusato Ginga Line. From 1991 she offered express trains between Kitami and Obihiro , which also stopped in Ashoro.

The Ashoro Galaxy Hall 21 service area , which opened in August 2004, was created from the rather simple reception building from 1939 through new construction and additions . The Hokkaidō Chihoku Kōgen Tetsudō gave up the railway operation and put the Furusato Ginga line on April 21, 2006, whereupon the tracks were removed in the station part of the service station complex.
