The Oketo Station ( Jap. 置戸駅 , Oketo-eki ) is a former railway station on the Japanese island of Hokkaido . It was located in the Tokachi Sub-prefecture in the Oketo City area and operated from 1911 to 2006. It has been used as an art museum since 2012 .
description
Oketo was a connecting station on the Furusato Ginga Line from Ikeda to Kitami . The station was located in the city center and was oriented from southwest to northeast, the Oketo forest railway branched off to the west . Before 1996 it owned three tracks for passenger traffic. These were located on the main platform and on a central platform that was connected to the station building on the northwest side of the facility by an overpass . On the south-east side there were extensive wood storage areas and wood-processing industries, which were accessed by several freight tracks. After a renovation, the station presented itself as a two-track system with side platforms .
The Oketo Poppo Kaiga-kan art museum ( 置 戸 ぽ っ ぽ 絵 画 館 ) has been housed on the second floor of the former reception building since 2012 . It shows around 500 works (mostly paintings) that either come from anonymous artists or have been donated. The museum is run by a non-profit organization with around 150 volunteers.
history
The Railway Authority (later the Ministry of Railways ) opened the station on September 25, 1911, along with the second section of the Abashiri Line from Rikubetsu to Kitami . From 1912 the Abashiri line was called the Abashiri Main Line. In 1920 the construction of the Oketo forest railway began to promote forestry in the surrounding forests. From November 1921 a 16.6 km long main line and two branch lines of 9.6 and 11.8 km in length were in operation. By 1925, the branch lines had grown to 25.1 and 24.9 km in length. In 1961 the forest railway was shut down in favor of newly built roads.
In 1961, the Abashiri main line was renamed the Chikoho line. For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways stopped handling goods on March 29, 1982, and checked baggage on February 1, 1984. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . The local private railway company Hokkaidō Chihoku Kōgen Tetsudō took over the route on June 4, 1989 and renamed it Furusato Ginga Line. From 1991 it offered express trains between Kitami and Obihiro , which also stopped in Oketo. The rather simple reception building from 1932 was replaced in 1996 by a two-storey new building made of reinforced concrete .
The Hokkaidō Chihoku Kōgen Tetsudō gave up the railway and put the Furusato Ginga line on April 21, 2006 shut down. After the station building had been vacant for almost a year, a dental clinic moved in April 2007. In February 2012 the newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun was looking for a permanent exhibition space for anonymous and donated works of art, whereupon a committee of art lovers was formed. This set up the Oketo Poppo Kaiga-kan art museum on the second floor and opened it on October 25, 2012.
