Dumbarton Central is a through station in the Scottish town of Dumbarton in West Dunbartonshire . In 1984 the station building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest category A.

traffic

The station was opened as Dumbarton Station in 1850 by the North British Railway as part of the Caledonian and Dumbartonshire Junction Railway connecting bowling to the pier at Balloch and renamed Dumbarton Central Station two years later . Today's station is based on a new construction of the old station, which was also expanded to four tracks. In addition to the Caledonian and Dumbartonshire Junction Railway, Dumbarton was the terminus of the newly established Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway , which ran from Glasgow along the north bank of the Clyde . The fourth track was removed after 1976. Today the station is served by trains on the West Highland Line (Glasgow - Mallaig ) and the North Clyde Line ( Helensburgh or Balloch to Glasgow or Edinburgh ). With Dumbarton East , the city has a second train station.

The one-story station building is located close to the center on Station Road . It shows features of the Tudor Gothic with brick decorations , a cantilevered, crenellated parapet and pointed arched windows partly flanked by pillars . The wooden entrance door of the ticket sales hall, built around 1900, has decorations. Furthermore, lead glass windows are installed there. Ornate, arched stairways with decorative tiles lead to the platforms on both sides. Both platforms are constructed identically and run parallel.
