The station spirit is a depot and a branching point to the railway lines Wanne-Eickel - Hamburg and Prussia - Munster .

Location and description

The station is located in Münster at route kilometer 64 between the overpass of the Münster – Hamm railway line (east of Hammer Straße) and the Sternbusch level crossing, between the Geistviertel and the Prussian stadium. At the eastern beginning of the station, the Preußen – Münster line branches off , so that this is the last opportunity to switch between the two lines. For trains in the direction of Wanne-Eickel, the operating point has the status of a station , for those in the direction of Prussia (located in the Horstmar von Lünen district, the route continues to Dortmund), it has the status of a junction , as there are no exit signals in this direction of travel and thus the limiting entry signals have the function of a block signal .

Originally, the station had, in addition to the two continuous main tracks, five more tracks, which were located south of the line and directly connected to the branch to Prussia. However, only one of these remains today. In the station there was the dispatcher interlocking Gnf and the switch attendant interlocking Gs. Since the opening of the new central interlocking Mf in Münster main station in 1985, all facilities of the Geist station have been remotely controlled from there; the two signal boxes were therefore torn down.

Breakpoint mind

Immediately north of the main line to Wanne-Eickel, the Münster – Coesfeld line runs without being part of the station (you can only switch between the lines at the Mecklenbeck station). On this railway line, however, there was a stop at route km 107 in the area of the station , which was in operation from 1924 to 1966. According to an assessment by the city of Münster, a re-establishment would make sense due to the passenger potential, but not feasible due to local conditions. The railroad tracks are not level with the street running next to them.

Preußenstadion stop

Shortly after the junction, already outside the Geist train station, on the route to Prussia at kilometer 42 was the Preußenstadion stop , where only special trains stopped. The breakpoint was lifted in 1970. Here, too, the city of Münster sees sufficient passenger potential for re-establishment. In order to implement this, however, the double-track expansion of the line would first have to take place.
