description

View of the platforms

Gotemba is a through station on the Gotemba line , which runs from Kōzu to Numazu and is operated by the company JR Central . Regional trains run on it at irregular intervals (approx. Every 30 to 60 minutes); In addition, there are individual repeater trains during rush hour, which run from Gotemba to the two end stations. On the section between Gotemba and Matsuda runs three times a day on weekdays and four times a day on weekends the express Fujisan the railway company Odakyu Electric Railway (until the change of timetable in March 2018 as Asagiri called). This continues from Matsuda on the Odakyū Odawara Line to Shinjuku Station in Tokyo .

The station is located in the city center and faces northeast to southwest. It has five tracks, three of which are used for passenger traffic. They are located on the house platform and on a covered central platform . There are also two sidings east of the three through tracks. The station building has the shape of a riding station that spans the western house platform and the central platform. According to its geographical location, the western station forecourt is named after the Fuji volcano , the eastern one after the Otome Pass. Until the new station was built in the mid-1980s, the station building was on the west side, with an adjoining covered overpass.

Both station forecourts are important hubs for regional bus traffic, with numerous lines serving tourist purposes and only running seasonally. The bus companies represented here include Fujikyū Yamanashi Bus , Fujikyū City Bus , Fujikyū Shōnan Bus , Hakone Tozan Bus and Odakyū Hakone Highway Bus .

In 2016, an average of 4906 passengers used the station every day.

As soon as the state railroad decided to run the Tōkaidō main line via Gotemba, the place experienced a rapid upswing, because due to the scenic location between the volcanoes Fuji and Hakone , many wanted to benefit from the upcoming tourism boom. The section from Kōzu via Matsuda , Gotemba and Numazu to Shizuoka was opened on February 1, 1889. The opening ceremony was very modest; The night before, a major fire had destroyed several hundred buildings (the railway systems themselves were spared). The Gotemba horse-drawn railway (gauge 762 mm) opened on November 11, 1898, connected the station with villages in the area. After several extensions, it had a length of 17.3 km and was in operation until 1928.

The station suffered a major loss of importance with the opening of the new line via Atami on December 1, 1934, which drew the entire national traffic of the Tōkaidō main line on itself. The old mountain route over Gotemba was only a branch line of local importance and was given the new name Gotemba Line . Due to an agreement between the Japanese State Railways and the private railway Odakyū Dentetsu , the latter began to run express trains from Gotemba to Tokyo-Shinjuku on October 1, 1955 . Diesel multiple units also operated on the Gotemba line from 1955 . It was electrified in two stages: on April 27, 1968 between Gotemba and Kōzu and on June 1 of the same year between Gotemba and Numazu.

For cost reasons, the State Railroad abandoned cargo handling on November 15, 1982, and on February 1, 1984, it also stopped checking in luggage. It replaced the original station building with a new building that opened on March 21, 1987. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the ownership of the new company JR Central on April 1, 1987 . One day earlier, JR Freight resumed freight traffic, but finally stopped it on April 1, 2006 and dismantled the neighboring freight yard.

In a small park north of the station one is since 2010 a Tender - steam locomotive series D52 on permanent display.
