The Zinggeler AG was in 1851 in the municipality Richterswil in the canton of Zurich as silk weaving founded in 1865 as Seidenzwirnerei in Richterswil and Embrach continued. The company remained family-owned until 1974 and had to be gradually liquidated from 2004 to 2013.

history

In 1851, the three teachers and brothers Rudolf , Samuel and Jakob Zinggeler in Wädenswil began manufacturing taffeta on handlooms . In 1865 they gave up the weaving mill and switched to silk twisting and began to produce threads with East Asian silk. In 1863 they founded the twisting mill in Embrach.

The brothers separated in 1873. Rudolf Zinggeler bought what was then the cotton mill "Stapfer, Rüegg & Co" in the "Mülenen" in Richterswil. In 1876 the municipality of Richterswil gave him the “Garnhänki” area free of charge, where he had the new building for a silk twisting mill built. In return he undertook to set up and maintain a hydrant system in the village .

In order to drive the machines in his factory, he received the right to use the Mülibach from the municipality. The star pond was created above Richterswil by damming the Mülibach . A two-kilometer-long pressure pipe led the water down to Lake Zurich , where it drove a water turbine in the twisting mill. For amusement and as a symbol of industrialization, the manufacturer let the water rise through a nozzle on festive days from 1875 onwards ( August 1st, etc.) to a fountain up to 85 meters high. Zinggeler was the sole owner of the "R. Zinggeler silk twisting mill" with factories in Wädenswil, Richterswil, Pfäffikon SZ , Embrach, Wangen SZ and Kloten .

After his death, the factory was continued by his three sons under the name “Rudolf Zinggeler Sons”. In 1908 his son Rudolf Zinggeler-Danioth took over the sole management of the "Seidenzwirnereien Rudolf Zinggeler" with business headquarters in Zurich and twisting plants in Richterswil and Embrach. After retiring for age, the company was converted into a family stock corporation in 1949.

The company celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1976. The two companies in Richterswil and Embrach employed around 90 people at the time. The company prepared itself for the future by continuously purchasing the most modern machines.

While pure silk threads were originally produced almost without exception, artificial silk and synthetic threads ( polyamide , polyester ) were made later . These were used as special and mixed threads of all kinds for weaving, tricotage, stocking, handkerchief and cable manufacture. Specialties were “Setalon” for the stocking knitting mills, “Stabfil” bulky yarn from endless man-made fibers for the tie weaving mills and cable silk for wrapping fine and extremely fine high-frequency strands.

The spinning mill had to cease operations in 2004. The historic factory building in Richterswil burned to the ground during the renovation work in June 2010 and was rebuilt in its previous form and location with loft apartments by 2018 . The listed director's villa from 1893 was renovated in 2013.
