The Kitami-Takinoue Station ( Jap. 北見滝ノ上駅 , Kitami-Takinoue-eki ) is a former railway station on the Japanese island of Hokkaido . It was located in Okhotsk Sub-Prefecture, on the territory of Takinoue Township, and operated from 1923 to 1985.

description

Aerial view (1978)

Kitami-Takinoue was the western terminus of the 34.3 km long Shokotsu line , which branched off from the (also disused) Nayoro main line in Shokotsu . The station was in the Sakurugenya district and faced east-west. It had a track for passenger traffic, the station building was on the north side of the facility. There were also several tracks for freight traffic and a siding with a turntable .

After the station was closed, the station building was relocated a few meters to the south towards the mountainside, but otherwise retained its former appearance. It is now used as a railway museum. A shunting locomotive is permanently parked in front of the building .

history

The Ministry of Railways opened the station on November 5, 1923, along with the entire Shokotsu line to Shokotsu near Mombetsu . Takinoue was an important center of forestry and large quantities of timber were loaded in the station . In addition, there were several sawmills and timber stores around the station. The intention was to continue the route south past Mount Teshio-dake to Kamikawa on the main Sekihoku line , but this project was not pursued. In the mid-1950s, freight traffic began to decline continuously. For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways gave up freight traffic on December 1, 1978, and baggage check-in on February 1, 1984. The Shokotsu Line was shut down on April 1, 1985.
