The station has three tracks with a side and a middle platform. The metro trains run on the Metropolitan Line and suburban trains run by the Chiltern Railways company . Almost all trains on the Metropolitan Line that run via Rickmansworth are considered express trains, as they pass several stations on the way to Baker Street in the city center without stopping (except in the edge hours). Chiltern Railways trains, on the other hand, do not stop during rush hour as the platforms are too short for the longer trains used at this time of day. In the early morning, individual Metropolitan trains run directly to and from Watford .

The double-lane section from the Croxleyhall Junction east of Rickmansworth to Amersham has a special operating situation: all trains, both the electric underground and diesel multiple units and freight trains of the railroad, use the same tracks.

history

The station was opened on September 1, 1887 by the Metropolitan Railway (predecessor of the Metropolitan Line). Initially, Rickmansworth was the terminus for almost two years, until July 8, 1889, when the extension opened towards Aylesbury . On September 2, 1925, a connecting track between Rickmansworth and the branch line to Watford opened on the same day was put into operation.

Also since that day there was an operational separation of the Metropolitan Line in Rickmansworth with a change from railcars to steam locomotives after the underground tracks had been electrified in the direction of London. The sections to Amersham and Chesham were not electrified until September 12, 1960; the last steam-powered train ran on September 10, 1961. Scheduled traffic on the connecting track to the Watford branch line was stopped on January 3, 1960. May 1987, however, some trains use this connection again.
