Entry of the steam locomotives vom Brocken (left) and Drei Annen Hohne into Schierke station

The station Schierke is the station of the Harz narrow gauge railways operated Brockenbahn in the district Schierke the city of Wernigerode in the Harz in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The station, located at a height of 687 meters, was opened on June 20, 1898 and has been in constant use as a station ever since. With the completion of the route to the Brocken on October 4, 1898, the mainly tourist trains to the highest mountain in northern Germany ran here. Since Brocken station was not served in winter due to the amount of snow, the trains always ended in Schierke from October 16 to April 29. The Brocken was only approached in winter after the German winter sports championships in spring 1950.

Due to the Brocken's location in the border area between GDR and FRG , the Brocken Railway between Schierke and Brocken station was closed to public transport from August 13, 1961. The railroad and station were only used for military purposes or for the needs of the local population. After the political turning point in 1989 , however, the Brocken Railway was repaired and the Schierke station was used again in its original function.

Location and facilities

The station is a little above the village of Schierke in the Harz National Park area . The access roads were temporarily closed to motorized individual traffic. Taxis, supply vehicles and vehicles with an appropriate permit, as z. B. is granted to guests of the Brockenhotel, but were allowed to drive up to the train station. Currently (as of 2012), however, the routes are open to road traffic. There is a public, chargeable car park directly at the station building. A mobile snack bar is also operated in the station area. The flint cliff is just north of the train station .

The station is only served by steam-hauled trains of the Harz narrow-gauge railways. Sometimes trains stop at Schierke station, or two trains on the otherwise single-track line meet .
