The Takanawa Gateway Station ( Jap. 高輪ゲートウェイ駅, Takanawa-Gētowei-eki ) is located in Minato in Tokyo .
history
The East Japan Railway Company (JR East) gave in June 2014 to build a new station between Tamachi and Shinagawa on the site of the former track ladder Tamachi Sharyo Center ( 田町車両センター ) announced shortly before the Summer Olympics in 2020 in Tokyo to go into operation should. Kengo Kuma , who was already responsible for the new national stadium , served as the architect .
Construction work began in February 2017. In 2018, JR East collected suggestions from the population to determine the name of the station. Most of the entries suggested the name Takanawa ( 高 輪 ); it was followed by Shibaura ( 芝 浦 ) and Shibahama ( 芝 浜 ). The name Takanawa Gateway ultimately selected by JR East , on the other hand, was in 130th place in terms of the number of submissions and sparked controversy because of its length and the English term "gateway". The selection was justified by JR East with the historical background of the Takanawa area as the "gateway to Edo ".
Construction work was completed in November 2019 and operations began on March 14, 2020. It was the first new station on the Yamanote Line since it was connected to Nishi-Nippori Station in 1971 and the first on the Keihin-Tōhoku Line since Saitama-Shintoshin Station opened in 2000.
Type of construction and tracks
