The city of Tampere is connected to the Finnish railway network, which is operated by the state-owned VR-Yhtymä , via the Tampere train station ( Finnish: Tampereen rautatieasema , Swedish : Tammerfors järnvägsstation ) .
Tampere was first connected to the route from Turku via Tampere to Hämeenlinna in 1876 . The wooden reception building at the time was quickly unable to cope with the growing number of passengers and was replaced by a new building in 1936. Its 36 meter high clock tower is striking .
There are connections to the capital Helsinki , Turku, Jyväskylä , Oulu , Pori and Haapamäki .
