history

Waldheim, freight yard
Waldheim station with DB train (2016)

The station was opened on September 1, 1852 together with the Limmritz - Chemnitz section , the last section of the Riesa - Chemnitz railway line. Although two branch lines began here with the Waldheim – Rochlitz (opened on December 6th, 1893) and Waldheim – Kriebethal (opened on December 10th, 1896) lines , the tracks of the separation station for these branches off were quite simple. For the trains to Rochlitz there was only one track that could be moved. This was on the island platform, which is now the only platform ever, opposite is the platform track of the main Riesa – Chemnitz line. A second platform without a roof existed until the second track of the main line was rebuilt and electrified. In the meantime, the Rochlitz side of the island platform has also been integrated into the main line, and the track has now been abandoned.

In the 1880s, the Waldheim train station was given a new look with the demolition of the farm buildings (1882 and 1885) and the waiting hall and goods shed (both in 1885). Signal boxes A and B were put into operation in 1896. Today's reception building was opened on December 21, 1920. The W2 signal box followed in 1931. Other high-rise buildings of the station were a goods shed, a loading ramp, farm buildings, a railway maintenance office, a residential building, the engine shed and a luggage elevator.

On August 15, 1998, the Waldheim – Rochlitz railway was shut down. A few months later, the Waldheim – Kriebethal railway line, used for freight traffic, followed on December 31, 1998. Since then, Waldheim is no longer a separation station. After the signal boxes B1 and W2 were closed in 2010, the reception building was partially demolished in January 2015. The remaining part is empty and is falling into disrepair. The long goods shed is also no longer used, as is the boiler house , connected via a turntable , in which locomotives were previously stationed for the shunting service and transfers to the paper mills in the Zschopau valley. Only several loading lines remained in operation for a few years. Since 2016, apart from the main tracks and the track connections between them, only one passing track has been in use.
