history
The Yoyogi station was opened on September 23, 1906, on October 12, 1909 a train of the Chūō-Sōbu line stopped for the first time at the station. A few months later, on December 16, 1909, the first train of the Yamanote Line also stopped here. On April 20, 2000, the Toei station opened and a Ōedo line train stopped here for the first time.
A fire in the JR station building on May 20, 2002 resulted in operations on the Yamanote Line being completely halted for some time for safety reasons.
Type of construction and tracks
The stations of the JR East and the Toei are built in the most common design of a through station. The JR East station has 4 tracks with two external side platforms and a central central platform. Tracks 1 and 2 are served by the Yamanote line, tracks 3 and 4 by the Chūō-Sōbu line. The Toei station has only two tracks, which are served by a single central platform.
However, there is no direct transfer between the JR East and Toei stations in the same building. To change trains, you have to leave the JR East building through the west or north exit to reach the adjacent Toei train station.
