The Gura Putnei – Putna railway is a branch line in Romania . It runs in the northeast of the country in the valley of the Putna river through the Obcina Mare mountains in Bukovina .

history

During the creation of the railway line, it was on the territory of Austria within the Habsburg dual monarchy .

In 1889, the Dorneşti – Rădăuți line of the Bukowinaer Lokalbahnen company went into operation, which was taken over by the New Bukowinaer Lokalbahn a few years later . In 1895 this company received the concession to continue building the line as a standard-gauge railway in the Suceava valley to Brodina (then Frassin ). The concession stipulated that construction work should begin immediately and be completed by July 1, 1898. Starting from this line, a branch line to Putna was built from Gura Putnei station (then Karlsberg) . It was finally opened on July 7, 1898 together with the Rădăuți – Brodina railway.

The branch line was mainly used to access the forests south of Putna in the Obcina Mare Mountains; Here, the “religious fund” of the Romanian Orthodox Church ran intensive forestry from the Putna monastery . At the beginning of the 20th century, several narrow-gauge railways were built into the valleys above Putna, but all of them were abandoned in the 1980s.

After the First World War, the Bukovina came to Romania; the route was taken over by the Romanian state railway CFR .

Current situation

The line is single-track and not electrified. It is part of the course book route 515 from Dorneşti to Nisipitu or Putna. The possibility of access to Putna Monastery is of major tourist interest. Currently (2009) around five local trains run daily in both directions.

In July 2008, the line was damaged by floods, but quickly put back into operation. The CFR is considering shutting down the deficit route or leaving it to private providers.
