The Kleinschmalkalden – Brotterode railway was a branch line in Thuringia , which was originally built and operated by the Schmalkalder Kreisbahn in the sponsorship of the Schmalkalden district . In Kleinschmalkalden it joined the Schmalkalden – Kleinschmalkalden railway line and led to Brotterode .
history
The Brotterode fire on July 10, 1895, in which 729 of 842 buildings in the town were destroyed, made it necessary to reach the town for reconstruction. In addition to the Brotterode – Wernshausen field railway , the construction of a standard-gauge railway was pushed ahead. The construction of the district's own railway was only possible with the help of the state of Prussia and the province of Hesse-Nassau (Kleinbahnfond), which each provided 370,000 marks . On December 19, 1898, the entire route from Kleinschmalkalden to Brotterode was finally opened. The company was run by the Prussian State Railroad from the start , and later by the Deutsche Reichsbahn on behalf of the district of Herrschaft Schmalkalden. From April 1, 1949, the Deutsche Reichsbahn had the sole right of disposal.
The passenger trains usually ran from the district town of Schmalkalden to Brotterode without having to change trains. On December 14, 1964, the Auwallenburg – Brotterode section was shut down and dismantled. Ore was loaded in Auwallenberg. The passenger transport Pappenheim – Auwallenburg was already operated in 1965 in the rail replacement service; it officially ended on March 17, 1968. In 1986 the tracks to Brotterode were re-laid to connect a coal-fired power station in Brotterode. In the course of the change in the GDR, the power plant was shut down in 1990.
Since 1990 there have usually been several special trains every year to the Auwallenburg loading station. This mountain stretch was popular with locals and photographers. Attempts by a private railway company to set up regular passenger traffic on the Schmalkalden route in 1996, even to the Auwallenburg loading station, failed. Freight traffic from Kleinschmalkalden to Auwallenburg was discontinued on January 31, 1994. The line was dismantled in 2001/02, as was the Schmalkalden – Kleinschmalkalden railway.
A railway cycle path , the Mommelstein cycle path , was built on part of the route .
