Railway Laurila – Kandalaksha to Laurila

The Liedakkala – Kalkkimaa railway was a Finnish non-electrified railway line , the end of which was in the village of Kalkkimaa near the town of Tornio . The branch line branched off from the line between Kemi and Rovaniemi in the village of Liedakkala between the Laurila and Törmä junction stations.

history

The railway line was originally built to transport broken limestone from open-cast mines . Oy Kalkkimaa Ab , founded in 1917 and merged with Rauma-Repola Oy in 1952 , owned a dolomite limestone quarry near Ruottala near Kalkkimaa . The place belonged to Alatornio, which was incorporated into the city of Tornie in 1973. The dolomite deposit is the largest in the Nordic countries .

The line, opened in 1933, was used to remove it from this quarry and the associated facilities. Freight traffic ceased on February 1, 1982.

The lime works, newly built in 1972, has been owned by Svenska Mineral AB since 2000.

The total length of the route was about eight kilometers. After almost five kilometers a connection branched off to a substation.

After the cessation of freight traffic on this route, the tracks on the approximately three-kilometer-long section from the station in Kalkkimaa to the branch of the track to the substation were dismantled. This track remained operational until the mid-2000s and was occasionally used to transport transformers. For this purpose, the connection to the main line in Liedakkala, which was expanded with the closure of the secondary line, had to be established. In 2009 these tracks were dismantled.

After the rest of the section has been torn down, it will be used as a forest path; in winter it is a cross-country ski trail that is maintained by snowmobile .

Freight traffic on the line ceased on February 1, 1982, at the same time the station was closed.

Liedakkala train station

Liedakkala Railway Station was a railway station in Liedakkala Village in Keminmaa Municipality in Lapland Province. The branch station of the Laurila – Kandalaksha railway line, opened on October 16, 1909, was located about 15 kilometers north of Kemi .

The original wooden station building was built in 1907 according to plans by Thure Hellström. The middle part of the building was open according to the plans, it was closed around 1930. The building was destroyed in the war in 1944. Architect Jarl Ungern planned the building, which was newly constructed in 1945. These were torn down after the station was closed.
