The Petrovice u Karviné – Karviná-Doly railway is a freight service in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated by the Imperial and Royal Emperor Ferdinand's Northern Railway (KFNB) as the Petrowitz – Karwin local railway . Today only the section from Petrovice u Karviné to Karviná (formerly Fryštát / Freistadt ) is still in operation , the further section to Karviná-Doly has been closed and dismantled.

history

The license for the Petrowitz – Karwin local railway was awarded to the KFNB on July 26, 1896. Part of the license was the obligation to complete the line within a year and a half and “ open it to public transport ”. The license was issued until December 31, 1983. The line was opened on September 1, 1898 only for freight traffic. The KFNB carried out the operation itself.

After the nationalization of the KFNB on January 1, 1906, the line belonged to the network of the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB). From January 1, 1907, the kkStB also took over the management.

After the First World War, the line came to the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). These now also took up travel. In 1921 the timetable of the local railway indicated up to six mixed pairs of 2nd and 3rd class trains over the entire route. Four more operated between Petrowitz and Freistadt. They needed about 40 minutes for the ten kilometer route.

In the mid-1930s, the use of modern motorized trains resulted in a significant increase in the timetable and a significant reduction in travel time to 23 minutes. The winter timetable of 1937/38 recorded up to 16 pairs of trains a day, all of which ran as motorized trains.

In October 1938 the Republic of Poland annexed the entire Olsa area and with it the railway area. Until the beginning of the Second World War , the line belonged to the network of the Polish State Railways (PKP). After the occupation of Poland by the German Reich in autumn 1939, the line came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Opole . In the Reich course book , the connection was now included as course book route 149p Petrowitz – Karwin . After the end of the Second World War, the entire line came back to the ČSD.

The section between Karviná město and Karviná hlavní nádraží (today Karviná-Doly) was closed in 1959 in connection with the re-routing of the Louky nad Olší – Bohumín line and the construction of a new Karviná hlavní nádraží station. Scheduled passenger traffic between Petrovice u Karviné and Karviná město ceased on May 26, 1962. In the 1959/60 timetable, 13 pairs of passenger trains were listed between Petrovice and Karviná hlavní nádraží, almost all of which were motorized trains. Another only served the section between Petrovice and Karviná město.
