Parking facilities Porto Canale 1990-2000

Fiumicino Porto Canale 1898–1990

The railway line between Rome and Fiumicino opened in 1898. At that time it ended in the middle of the city at the Fiumicino Porto Canale train station . In 1938 it was electrified and in 1960 it was converted to double lane except for the short section Fiumicino – Fiumicino Porto Canale. In March 1990 the trains were only running to / from Fiumicino, the Fiumicino Porto Canale station was initially retained as a parking facility. In 1990, the small branch line to Fiumicino Airport was added, at the same time the Porto stop , which had previously been used as an airport connection, was canceled. In 1994 the regional trains to / from Fiumicino and / or from / to the airport were re -routed as FM1 (now FL1 ) of the Roman S-Bahn system and extended through Rome to the north. Since most of the trains ran to the airport after the opening of the branch line anyway, the line to the city station of Fiumicino was closed in 2000 and canceled along with the old terminal station Porto Canale.

Between 1999 and 2006, three new stations were created as part of the introduction of the S-Bahn: Villa Bonelli (1996), Parco Leonardo (2005) and Fiera di Roma (2006). Among other things, the Leonardo Express operates on the route .
