The Sedlnice – Mošnov railway is an electrified regional railway connection in the Czech Republic . It branches in Sedlnice from the railway Studénka-Veřovice and leads to Mošnov to Ostrava airport .

history

Ostrava Airport was originally built as a military airport, but has only been used for civil purposes since 1989. Since then, Moravskoslezský kraj has developed the airport into a modern regional airport. In the course of structural change in the region, an industrial park was also created at the airport. Until now, there was only a traffic connection to the airport by road. Regular buses take about 30 minutes from the center of Ostrava to the airport.

Mošnov Railway Station, Ostrava Airport (2015)

The aim of the railway connection of the airport is to improve the traffic relations with the airport itself, as well as with the neighboring industrial zone in Mošnov. The Moravskoslezský kraj built a new railway line in 2013 and 2014, which branches off the Studénka – Veřovice railway line at Sedlnice and leads directly to the airport terminal. Moravskoslezský kraj invested a total of 580 million CZK in the new line , 85 percent of which was financed through a support program of the European Union. The Czech state also invested a further CZK 350 million in the modernization and electrification of the Studénka – Sedlnice line.

The completion of the project was celebrated on December 16, 2014, and regular passenger trains started on April 13, 2015. The S2 line runs every two hours on the route Mosty u Jablunkova – Český Těšín – Bohumín – Studénka – Mošnov, Ostrava Airport. Modern double-decker multiple units of the ČD class 471 “CityElefant” are used. In the future, the use of single-deck electric multiple units of the ČD series 650 "RegioPanter" is planned.
