history
The line was built as part of the Riga - Pskov railway between 1886 and 1889 and opened on July 22, 1889. From 1907 the trains from Saint Petersburg to Warsaw and until 1998 the trains from Riga to Saint Petersburg ran on this route. Today these trains run directly to Russia via Rēzekne, Latvia . Passenger traffic was discontinued in 2001.
Operation today
Today only freight trains run on the route. There is passenger transport in Valga and Piusa. One of the two pairs of trains between Tartu and Koidula (see Tartu – Pechory line ) has been extended to Piusa since the timetable change in May 2014. (As of August 2014)
