The Walthersdorf – Crottendorf railway was a branch line in Saxony . It ran in the Zschopau valley from Walthersdorf to Crottendorf .

history

Crottendorf ob Bf (December 1996)

The line was opened on December 1, 1889 as a standard-gauge secondary line . Although Walthersdorf was the connecting station to the Annaberg-Buchholz-Schwarzenberg railway line , all trains always ran to and from Schlettau .

In the 1980s, the line became known nationwide when the class 86 steam locomotives were last scheduled to haul all trains in Germany. These missions only ended in 1988.

After the political change in eastern Germany in 1989, the line quickly lost its importance in passenger and freight traffic: freight traffic was officially discontinued on January 1, 1995, and passenger train traffic was maintained until December 31, 1996. On June 1, 1999 the line was closed.

Today there is an asphalt bike path on the former railway line.

Route description

course

The Walthersdorf – Crottendorf railway began at Walthersdorf (Erzgeb) station on the Annaberg-Buchholz – Schwarzenberg railway . The approximately 5 km long railway line always ran south in the valley of the upper Zschopau . In the local area of Walthersdorf the tracks lay east of the river, they changed in the upper village to the west side. Shortly before the terminus in Crottendorf, Dorfstrasse and Zschopau were crossed again. At kilometer 5.176 the line ended in the upper village of Crottendorf. Today a bike path runs along the route.
