Weiden – Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg railway line
The Weiden – Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg railway connects Weiden in the Upper Palatinate on the Regensburg – Hof railway via Bayreuth with the Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg station on the Bamberg – Hof railway .
It consists of two sections that were built at different times and initially operated by different railway companies.
- The Bayreuth – Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg railway was built in 1853 as a Bavarian leased railway . The city of Bayreuth financed its construction and then leased it to the Bavarian state . The operator was the Royal Bavarian State Railways (K.Bay.Sts.B.).
- The Weiden – Bayreuth railway via Kirchenlaibach was opened in 1863 by the Actiengesellschaft der Bavarian Eastern Railways as the Irrenlohe – Bayreuth railway. On January 1, 1876, the Ostbahngesellschaft was nationalized and the line was taken over by the K.Bay.Sts.B. accepted.
At the Bayreuth train station , the two companies initially had separate facilities. There were no through trains, and the need for suitable connections for transfer passengers was not yet recognized. For cost reasons, however, passenger traffic was handled right from the start on the platform of the "leased railway" that had existed since 1853.
In 2020 there are only a few continuous connections between Weiden and Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg in terms of passenger traffic. The local railcars from Agilis coming from Weiden mainly travel to Weidenberg via Bayreuth . Further Agilis connections are offered between Marktredwitz, Kirchenlaibach and Bayreuth as well as Bayreuth, Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg and Coburg. Several trains run continuously from Marktredwitz to Coburg and back, but occasionally also between Weiden and Coburg. The DB Regio trains from Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg run from Bayreuth on the Schnabelwaid – Bayreuth railway towards Nuremberg .
