Bai Yang
Bai Yang ( Chinese 白杨 , Pinyin Bái Yáng ; actually 杨成芳 , Yáng Chéngfāng ; born April 22, 1920 in Beijing , Republic of China ; † September 18, 1996 in Shanghai , People's Republic of China ) was a Chinese actress .
Life
Bai grew up in poor conditions and made her film debut at the age of twelve with the Lianhua film company in Gugong Xinyuan (1932). In 1936 she found a job with the Mingxing Film Company and played her first leading role alongside Zhao Dan in Shen Xiling's comedy Shizi jietou (1937). From the late 1930s she was engaged in anti-Japanese resistance theater and shot for the Zhongyang film company in Zhongqing .
In 1947, Bai Yang starred in the melodrama The Waters of the Spring Current Flow East ( Yi jiang chun shui xiang dong liu ) by Cai Chusheng and Zheng Junli , which broke visitor records in China. Bai played a worker from 1931 to 1945 who had to fight for survival with her son and mother-in-law, while her husband, who lived apart, could afford luxury.
With the literary adaptation of the New Year's Sacrifice ( Zhufu , 1956) by Sang Hu , she received international attention. The film based on a story by Lu Xun is about a woman in the Chinese feudal era.
With the Cultural Revolution in the 1960s, Bai Yang's career also ended. It was not until 1989 that she appeared again in the film: as Song Qingling , the communist leader and sister-in-law of Chiang Kai-shek , in the television film Xiang renjian du shi ai .
