Baily is the remnant of an impact crater on the border between Mare Frigoris in the north and Lacus Mortis in the south. Further to the east is the Hercules crater .
Baily has been inundated by lava in the past and only the northern half of the crater rim has been preserved to some extent. This remainder of the crater rim rises about 500 meters above the surroundings. The northeast edge shows a bulge; possibly the remains of another crater that once overlapped Baily. The inside of the crater is flat and shows no significant signs of impact.
