Balázs Berkes

Balázs Berkes (born October 12, 1937 in Budapest ) is a retired Hungarian double bass player , jazz musician and university professor.

Life

Berkes began playing the cello as a teenager , but later switched to the double bass. From 1958 to 1962 he studied the double bass with Zoltán Tibay at the Franz Liszt Music Academy . Until 1978 he worked in various ensembles of the Hungarian radio and was a member of the Hungarian radio and television dance orchestra. After that he worked for the group Stúdió 11 for a long time . In these groups he also played the electric bass . In addition to working on radio and television, he also worked in other formations. Since 1962 he has given regular concerts with the pianist György Vukán . From 1980 the two formed the group Super Trio together with the drummer Imre Kőszegi . In 1990 this group was followed by the Creative Art Trio together with György Vukán and Elemér Balázs . In addition, there was collaboration with foreign musicians such as Jiggs Whigham , Albert Mangelsdorff , Stjepko Gut , Charles Tolliver and Annette Lowman .

From 1993 until his retirement in 2007, Berkes taught jazz at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest.
