Balša III.
Balša III. Stracimirović (* 1386 ; † 1421 ) was a Serbian prince in Montenegro from the ruling family of the Balšići . He was the last of his family to rule the Zeta .
Balša was the son of Prince Đurađ II. Balšić and his wife Jelena, a daughter of Prince Lazar Hrebeljanović .
When his father died in 1403, Balša III followed him. as a 17-year-old in power. In the beginning, his mother had a great influence on government affairs. Jelena ensured a close political connection between Zeta and Stefan Lazarević's Serbia . In this way she tried to preserve the independence of the Balšić principality, which threatened to be destroyed at the beginning of the 15th century between the then great powers Venice and the Ottomans .
In 1419, Balša III began. an unfortunate war against the Venetians to regain lost coastal areas at Kotor and Bar . Shortly before his death in 1421 he transferred his principality to Stefan Lazarević, who passed it on to his nephew Đurađ Branković . This ended the rule of the Balšić in Montenegro. Instead of them, the Crnojevići were soon able to establish an independent rule for a few decades.
