Baldwin City is a city in Douglas County in the US state of Kansas and is located south of Lawrence . According to the 2000 census, Balwin City had 3,400 residents. The city, which is crossed by US Highway 56, still has many quiet, brick-paved streets. It is the seat of Baker University , the oldest university in the state.
The city was named after John Baldwin, who built the first sawmill and the first flour mill on this site in 1857.
