Baldwin Wake (nobleman, † 1213)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Baldwin Wake († July 20, 1213 ) was an Anglo-Norman nobleman.

Baldwin Wake was a son of his father of the same name, Baldwin Wake and his wife Agnes du Hommet . After the death of his father in 1198 he inherited his possessions, including the Barony of Bourne with Bourne Castle in Lincolnshire , England , possessions on the Channel Island of Guernsey and in Normandy . During the Franco-English War from 1202 onwards, his possessions in Normandy were confiscated by the French king around 1204. Presumably he negotiated with the French about the return of these possessions, because in 1207 he lost the favor of King John Ohneland and was imprisoned. Before 1210, however, he was released and got his English possessions back, while he had to give up his goods in Normandy. In the further course of the war with France, Wake died in 1213 while besieging a castle in Gascony with a crossbow bolt.

Wake had married Isabella Brewer , the widow of Fulbert of Dover and daughter of the royal judge William Brewer . With her he had at least one son who became his heir:
