The Balearic sand herb ( Arenaria balearica ) or Balearic sand herb is a species from the genus of sand herbs ( Arenaria ) and thus of the carnation family (Caryophyllaceae).

description

The Balearic Sandwort is a perennial plant that can reach heights of 2 to 10 centimeters. With its more or less rooted stems it forms dense lawns. The plant is hairy. The leaves are somewhat fleshy, their ovate blunt blade is only 2 to 4 millimeters long. The petiole is about as long as the blade. The flowers stand on threadlike stems that are 5 to 10 times as long as the sepals. The sepals are single-nerved and 2 to 3 millimeters long. The petals are white and up to twice as long as the sepals.

The species blooms between April and July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

The Balearic sand herb is native to Mallorca , Corsica , Sardinia and Montecristo . The species is naturalized in Great Britain, Ireland and northern France. It originally grows on shady cliffs and in debris fields, mostly at altitudes above 500 meters above sea level up to 1450 meters above sea level.

Taxonomy

Arenaria balearica was created by Carl von Linné in Syst. Nat., Ed. 12, 3: 230, first described in 1768. A synonym is Arenaria gayana F.N. Williams .

The species is grown as a rock garden plant.
