geography
The place emerged from an 18th century sugar plantation. The historic main building of the plantation now serves as a hotel. The settlements of Bongalo and Piaye are in the vicinity . The place shares its name with the Balembouche River and the Balembouche Bay , into which the river flows.
The plantation originally comprised around 500 acres (200 ha ). Today's settlement has hardly anything to do with the original plantation.
The place name first appears on maps of St. Lucia in the 1760s.
