The Tetela dagger knife is a dagger or knife from the Democratic Republic of the Congo
description
The knife has a symmetrical , double-edged blade . The blade has pointed bulges on the side. Sometimes there is a small guard . The material of the blade is either iron or copper, occasionally one half of a copper knife is partially blackened.
The handle is made of wood and can be decorated with wrapped copper wire. The knob is also made of wood and is available in different versions. There are examples with a spout made of metal (copper or brass) that is worked as a pointed thorn and there are also examples without this thorn. Some versions have a ring or loop instead .
The scabbard generally consists of two wooden leaves that are sewn with leather .
distribution
The knife is used by the ethnic groups east of the Bantu people of the Cuba in the Zaire basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo: the Tetela (Sungu), the Kusu and the Mpama . Museum collections mainly show specimens from before the 20th century.
