A bale gripper , also known as a bale gripper , is an attachment primarily for front loaders on tractors , wheel loaders and telehandlers . The device is used in particular to transport sensitive silage bales , but can also be used for unwrapped hay and straw bales or similarly shaped goods.

Designs

Bale grippers are available in different sizes and designs. They differ mainly in the design of the pliers gripping arms. These can consist of simple pipes, multi-part pipe bodies or plates. There are bale grippers with curved (especially for round bales) and with straight gripping legs (for square bales or universal use). Common to all construction methods is a rounded shape without sharp edges. This ensures that the film of silage bales remains undamaged during transport, which is important for a correct ensiling process. In the event of improper handling or wet silage, however, the film may be deformed or the bale may be lost and the film damaged as a result.

Working principle

The two gripping legs are moved apart with the aid of hydraulic cylinders and the bale is bypassed ("gripped"). Then the gripping legs are pressed towards the bale so that the bale can be lifted and transported.
