Ballot fountain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ballotsbrunnen is a place of tradition and customs in Iserlohn .

Ballot fountain

The fountain (also called Juffernspring) is located at the Rupenteich in the Iserlohn city forest. It was named in 1760 after its owner and holder of the water rights there , the Iserlohn councilor and from 1718 also the second mayor Heinrich Gisbert Ballot, a Westphalian merchant who was granted civil rights in the city of Iserlohn in 1679 .

Every year the so-called fountain drinking takes place traditionally on Whit Monday early in the morning . The pure and cool spring water is served to everyone by the reigning royal couple and court of the Iserlohner Schützenverein (IBSV). According to tradition, it should have a health-promoting and thus life-prolonging effect for the coming year. Already in pre-Christian times a healing power of the elixir from the Juffernspring was suspected, at that time it was assumed that the Germanic goddess Freya was blessed .

The Iserlohn tradition has also been framed in recent years by an elf dance performed by young dance students with classical music on the meadow next to the Rupenteich.

The Ballotsbrunnen, whose current appearance (stone wall with animal mask and inscription stone as well as a small pool in front) was only created in 1937 on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Iserlohn, is also one of the many legendary stations of the Sauerland forest route .
