Ballyclare ( Irish Bealach Cláir ) is a small town in historic County Antrim , Northern Ireland . The city belonged to the disbanded District Newtownabbey and has been part of the District Antrim and Newtownabbey since 2015 .

It is located in the Six Mile Valley 20 km north of Belfast near the E 01 to Larne . The population was determined in the 2011 Census to be 9919 people and has increased by more than 50% since 1981 (6159 people).

Ballyclare is known for the May Fair , the annual festival week in May, as well as for trout fishing and chainreactioncycles mail order bicycle business .

The ancestors of Mark Twain and Sam Houston immigrated to the New World from here. Jonathan Swift preached here.

Ballyclare had a strong paper industry in the 19th century .
