Ballylough Castle

Ballylough Castle is the ruins of a castle in County Antrim , Northern Ireland .

location

The ruin is about 2.5 kilometers south of Bushmills . Ballylough Castle used to belong to the Civil parish Billy . The area was later divided into the townlands of Ballylough, Ballyloughmore and Ballyloughbeg. Not far from the ruins is the Giant's Causeway .

history

The castle is mentioned in the annals of the four masters in a document from 1544 as Baile-an-locha . It served as the headquarters of Clan McQuillan and the MacDonnell family until it was conquered by the O'Donells of Tyrconell . Two nautical chests from a ship belonging to the Spanish Armada were kept in the castle until they were moved to Glenarm Castle in 1740 . Today only parts of the north and west walls are preserved.
