Ballynahow Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhaile na hAbha ) is a Tower House 4.6 km northwest of Thurles in Ireland's County Tipperary . It lies on the west bank of the Farneybridge River , a tributary of the Suir , and is considered a National Monument .
history
Ballynahow Castle was built in the early 16th century for the Purcell family , an Old English family who held the title of Baron of Loughmoe . The lower floors served as a farmhouse in the 1840s. In 1930 the Tower House became the property of the Republic of Ireland.
description
The Tower House is 15.2 meters high and has a battlement at the top , from which four machikulis, evenly distributed around the circumference, extend. It has five floors, slotted windows and a large, open fireplace on the 1st and 3rd floors. A hole in the north wall on the 3rd floor leads to a secret room in the wall. Originally, a conical wooden roof was placed on top, which was supported on trumpets .
