Balthayock House

After the surrounding gardens had been laid out in 1866, the manor house was built by 1870. The Scottish architect James MacLaren was responsible for the design . Balthayock Castle is isolated around 2.5 kilometers northwest of St Madoes. The main facade of the two-story mansion faces east. A porte-cochère emerges from the facade. They are designed with segmented arched openings, the gussets of which are decorated with steel ornaments. The outgoing wings are asymmetrical.

bridge

The bridge leads the access road to Balthayock House 300 meters northeast of the mansion across the valley of Little Balthayock Burns . The single arch bridge was built around 1870 based on a design by James MacLaren. Stylistically, it shows parallels to Thomas Telford's bridge architecture. The segment arch of the cast iron bridge is made up of five separately cast segments. The gussets are designed as latticework, which support the bearings for the four-meter-wide driveway bordered by cast-iron balustrades . The bridge has a clearance height of 28 m. The pillars on both sides, partly clad with natural stone , consist of roughly hewn quarry stone that was built into layered masonry . A pedestrian tunnel runs through the pillar on the south side to allow walks along the Balthayock Burns.
