The Baltimore Orioles FC was an American football club from Baltimore that was founded in 1893 and dissolved in 1895. In 1894 he took part in the game operations of the short-lived American League of Professional Football (ALPF).

history

After the Baltimore Orioles FC was founded in 1893, it played its games in 1894 in the American League of Professional Football , ALPF for short. However, the league only existed this one year and was also not fully completed. Furthermore, there were irregular clashes between individual teams, so that the Baltimore Orioles FC only made four league games compared to other clubs, such as the Philadelphia Phillies , which played nine league games. However, these were all won with a total score of 24: 3 goals, which meant second place in the table behind the Brooklyn Bridegrooms . The Baltimore Orioles FC, which practically represented the football section alongside the actual Baltimore Orioles , a baseball team of the National League , was sponsored by this same team during the championship.

In addition to the success of the soccer team, the baseball team celebrated the championship of the National League in 1894. At the first home game of the 1894 season, the team had almost 8,000 spectators and was well on the way to joining the baseball team's successes. With AJ Stewart a then known was football coach brought into the team, much to put some professional players from around Manchester in England to get involved.

He took players such as Little, Calvey, Ferguson, and Alec Wallace of Ardwick AFC (later Manchester City) into the team and was also involved in the transfer of Fred Davies, who moved from Sheffield United to the United States. Even Stewart was in the goal of the Baltimore Orioles during the championship games, although he had to accept only three goals in the four completed games.

The other clubs in the league were not particularly fond of the methods Baltimore Orioles FC used, as they only had local and inexperienced players without sponsorship. After the 10-1 victory over the Washington Nationals , which also had a baseball team in the National League, the coach of the football team Art Schmelz complained about the use of English players. The management of the Baltimore Orioles FC countered and said that most of their players are from the Detroit area .

On October 20, 1894, the ALPF was finally dissolved, which happened for various reasons, such as the low attendance figures and the financial problems of the clubs. However, not all clubs were informed of this, so it happened that on October 23, 1894 another, but already unofficial league match between Baltimore and Philadelphia was played. The Phillis were clearly outclassed 6: 1.

One of the team's top scorers was James McKendrick , who scored four goals in two games played.
