Under the name Baltimore Orioles played a major league baseball team from 1882 to 1899 . a. in the National League . In Baltimore regularly played baseball and football teams under this name that a Golden Oriole (Engl. Oriole ) refers. The current team of the Baltimore Orioles was originally founded in Milwaukee.

Founded in 1882, the Orioles played intermittently until 1890 in the American Association , another major league. When the American Association stopped playing, the team moved to the National League. Under the player-coach Ned Hanlon the title was won three times from 1894 to 1896, and second places in 1897 and 1898. For this purpose, u. a. the players Willie Keeler , John McGraw , Wilbert Robinson and Hughie Jennings , all of whom became members of the Baseball Hall of Fame .

The end came in 1899 when the National League reduced the number of teams from twelve to eight teams, with the Orioles being one of the canceled teams. In response to this, a team called the Baltimore Orioles played in the American League, which was now founded as a competition, from 1901, but after two seasons it moved to New York City and henceforth took up the role of New York Highlanders . This franchise was named the New York Yankees in 1913 and became the most successful baseball team of all time.
