Baltic University

The Baltic University was an exile - University of the Baltic states . It was founded in the post-war period for refugees from Estonia , Latvia and Lithuania in Hamburg (1946/47) and Pinneberg (1947–1949).

history

The university was founded in Hamburg in March 1946 in the British zone of occupation . The United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA), the Lutheran World Federation and other groups helped . The Estonian astronomer Ernst Öpik became its first rector , the second the Lithuanian archaeologist Jonas Puzinas (1905–1978). Since many of the staff and students had found accommodation in other countries, the university was closed in September 1949.

In 1947 the Baltic University had 1,025 students, around two thirds of whom were Latvians. A total of 76 students took their exams there, 53 of them Latvians, 16 Lithuanians and 7 Estonians. The vast majority of students continued their studies at other universities.

The university had around 170 professors and 1,200 students in eight faculties and 13 departments.

Student associations

Five student associations (now based in Riga ) were established at the Baltic University :

  • Fraternitas Imantica , February 18, 1947 red – gold – white
  • Spīdola , women's association, March 11, 1947 yellow – purple – white
  • Gersicania , March 14, 1947 white-purple-green
  • Zinta , women's association, April 21, 1947 dark blue – black – green
  • Fraternitas Cursica , May 7, 1947 black – gold – blue
